Megan and I went along to the opening day of the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Auckland City. She’s not a rugby fan, and despite being born and bred in Auckland, she had never been to Eden Park. It’s fair to say this was a bit of a coup on my part, facilitated by our friends’ generous gift of two tickets. Dutch builder U-Boat Worx’s proposed 1,250-tonne, 37.5m diesel-electric Nautilus can function as a yacht or a submersible. It has a depth rating of 200m, with a surface cruise speed of 9 knots and an underwater speed of 4 knots. The Nautilus will be able to stay underwater for up to four days; at cruise speed, the underwater endurance is six hours. When functioning as a boat, the Nautilus offers a massive sundeck equipped with a freshwater pool, a bar, and a luxurious dining table. This al fresco arrangement is retracted before the submersible slips below sea level. A newly invented, completely pressure-resistant electrical tender is stowed under the Nautilus’s aft deck and will stay outside while diving. Construction of Auckland’s first electric ferry is well underway. She’s one of two identical electric ferries being built for Auckland Transport (AT) by Auckland-based boatbuilders McMullen & Wing. The electric ferries are being designed and engineered by Auckland company EV Maritime. At 24m long, and able to carry up to 200 passengers and 30 bikes, these will be the biggest fully electric ferries in the southern hemisphere. Like fully electric cars, these ferries run purely on the energy stored in onboard batteries. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is pleased to announce that long-term partner Barfoot & Thompson has extended its partnership, boosting the club’s capability in hosting the final event of the inaugural Women’s World Match Racing Tour Championship. The 2022 Barfoot & Thompson Women’s World Match Racing Championship will be sailed on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour from 9-13 November, when global eyes will be on New Zealand and women in sport via the Rugby World Cup and IWG World Conference. The International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX), scheduled for September 27-29 in Tampa, Florida was cancelled due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Ian. Based on weather reports from NOAA and consultation with the City of Tampa, Tampa Convention Center, and other stakeholders, organisers decided to cancel the show for the safety of exhibitors and patrons. “It is a very difficult decision to cancel IBEX 2022, as we were on track to have an excellent event,” said Anne Dunbar, IBEX Show Director. “The entire IBEX team is very disappointed, but the safety of our community is our priority.
