At 182 years old, the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta lays claim to being the longest-running sporting event in New Zealand, even predating the America’s Cup by 11 years. Maritimo’s new Offshore Series splashed down at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show and marks the beginning of a new era for the predominantly flybridge-orientated Australian builder. So, no surprise that first new model was a flybridge version, the M600. Boating is getting easier all the time, and especially these days with record numbers of first-time buyers entering the market. According to the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association [USA], more than 35% of all buyers last year purchased a boat for the very first time. What’s more, a surprising proportion of these new boaters come from families with no past history of boat ownership. What this means is that there are a huge number of people entering dealer showrooms and walking the docks at major boat shows these days with no preconceptions of what they should expect to see on a list of standard features. Sealegs’ latest and largest recreational vessel to date is the 12RC (RIB Cabin) reviewed here. Sealegs has built and exported several similarly large vessels based around its heavy-duty Amphibious Enablement System 100 (AES), but those were for commercial or military applications. But while this vessel is also destined for an overseas buyer – in Brest, France – it will be used in a private capacity and has been specified with recreational family boating in mind. In 1982 a real entrepreneur and extroverted sort of fellow called Roger Dilly suggested to the committee of the Auckland Multihull Sailing Association (later to become NZ Multihull Yacht Club), a drag race from Devonport to Russell, loosely based on the speed record attempts of the 1930s and 1950s. “I was tired of being the poor cousin,” says Roger. “People who sailed multihulls were considered fruit loops. On September 2 Coastguard New Zealand paid special tribute to kaumātua Joe Hawke at a naming ceremony for its two new Lotto-funded rescue vessels, received thanks to a unique America’s Cup partnership between Coastguard, Lotto NZ and Emirates Team NZ The names of both vessels, Joe Hawke Rescue and Hukātai Rescue, were gifted by local iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. The first pays tribute to the late Joe Hawke, an inspirational Māori land rights leader and the second recognises the iwi’s close connection with the Waitematā. Project manager and lifelong sailor Scott Fickling bought this Guillaume Verdier-designed Class 40, first launched in 2008 as Desafio Cabo de Horno, with an eye to refitting her for short-handed racing. The plan was just about to swing into action when the first covid lockdowns hit in 2020, but in late January this year, after nearly two years of work, she finally re-entered the water as the bright-pink-liveried Vixen Racing. The 40-footer first came to New Zealand while being sailed two-handed round the world in the 2010 Global Ocean Race by Ross and Campbell Field, under the name Buckley Systems. This is the first time the dedicated fleet of Bruce Farr-design race boats built in west Auckland and launched in 1990 for the World Match Racing Championship, have been repowered, after around 32 years of enthusiastic use. Lachlan Trembath of Ovlov Marine says the company was involved in the initial set-up of the fleet, which has been sailed by the world’s top match racers over the years, as well as being regularly used for fleet racing and other regattas. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and DNV have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish energy-saving wind assistance propulsion technology. Wind-assisted propulsion will be the focus of a major innovation drive between DSME and DNV as part of shipping’s global decarbonization efforts. DNV is an independent expert in risk management and quality assurance. Both companies will jointly develop ship wind-assisted propulsion systems, including a rotor sail solution, fuel saving device technology, and will cooperate in promoting future-related businesses. NEW SHEDS and covered space for servicing and maintaining bigger boats have been the most significant changes with the recent upgrading of Half Moon Bay Marina. The object was to provide service facilities for the range of bigger craft berthed on the marina’s new North Pier – and to turn the old ‘one-season boatyard’ into a twelve-months-a-year operation. Now, 24 fully or partially covered work bays provide a more efficient boatyard system with faster throughput. The yard is now all seasons and all weathers, since the sheds offer protection from the prevailing southwest wind. Yard rates are the same, whether open or undercover.
