Boatbuilders, importers and owners want to present their craft in the best possible light, so it’s not surprising they show little enthusiasm for on-water boat reviews when it’s blowing a gale and/or bucketing down with rain. Coordinated superyacht chartering procedures in New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and Australia, eased border restrictions, safe cruising, diversity of sights and new marina and refit facilities, have created irresistible cruising opportunities in the South Pacific, which is primed to be the next great charter destination. Each country offers widely different cultures, sights and cruising grounds, but with the added bonus of closely aligned charter and entry rules. The New Zealand-based testing programme of Horonuku at Whenuapai Air Base – Stage Two of the project – was recently completed. ETNZ has developed Horonuku to challenge the World Land Speed Sailing Record. With the assistance of the RNZAF, the ETNZ’s Landspeed team was able to sign off on the many pre-designed configurations and main component tuning of the yacht, prior to its arrival at Lake Gairdner in the Australian outback. Horonuku sailed at up to 148kmph at Whenuapai while undergoing some punishing testing in shifty, gusty breeze. “It is clear to me that this craft is ready to stretch her legs and take a big breath of air,” said Glenn Ashby, who will pilot the vehicle for the land speed record attempts. “The feeling I have in the cockpit…

Five years after Mediterranean fanworm was last spotted at Tutukaka, the bay has officially been declared ‘fanworm-free’. In 2015, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Toi Moana dive team detected fanworm on the hull of a visiting boat whose movements were traced back to Auckland, via Tutukaka. Northland Regional Council were notified, mobilised their surveillance, and found the early signs of a fanworm infestation at Tutukaka Marina. Biosecurity New Zealand and Northland Regional Council were swift to develop a joint response that included a programme of dive surveillance. Meanwhile, the management of Tutukaka Marina worked with Northland Regional Council and other marina operators in the region to develop the ‘6 in 1 rule’ – any boat arriving in a participating marina must have been antifouled in the last six months,…

The location of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), halfway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, provides a superb venue. The show runs over four days, and to do it justice, requires at least two days to see it all and also enjoy meaningful conversations with vendors and fellow boaties. The range of boats on display at this show is always extensive, with something for everyone. The 33rd Sanctuary Cove Boat Show was loaded with everything from luxury motorboats and yachts, to trailer boats, PWCs, engines and supercars, watersports gear, gadgets and chandlery – even fishing lessons. Hosted by the Napier Sailing Club, the 2022 Toyota Optimist & Starling National Championships proved an ideal opportunity to witness first-hand New Zealand’s next generation of sailing talent tack, gybe and luff their way closer to potential representation on the world stage. Striking new aesthetics from a collaboration between a European designer and the Riviera design group, plus a range of new smart systems, has the Riviera 78 MY pushing into superyacht territory, as I found out when taking the first hull to sea on Australia’s Gold Coast. The 78 MY tops the company’s fleet of large flybridge yachts, following the release of the 72 model in 2018 and a raft of coupé models. Riviera has launched over 5,800 hulls during its 42 years of building. Riviera focusses on the 39-78-foot (11.9-23.8m) market for premium level motor yachts. However, by extending the hull of the successful 72, it has arguably also extended this focus. In most boats an automatic pump goes off, usually connected to an alarm and/or a blinking light, when water is detected in the bilge. On our 30-year-old Sparkman & Stephens the stringers and frames form little compartments in the aluminum hull that are not connected to one another. Water gets trapped in them and we can’t use the big bilge pump (located at the hull’s lowest point) to get rid of it. This design is meant to make the source of any humidity easily traceable – a nice thought, but also a major pain when you must mop up the water by hand. Well, the news is mostly bad, even for victorious stars of those halcyon days of offshore powerboat racing in the 1960s and 1970s. Most suffered the ultimate fate once their window of success had closed and were left to the ravages of time, allowed to fall derelict or chopped up. This was the fate of many once-sleek racers. Sadly, few have been restored to their former glory and, of the few survivors from the epic offshore racing wars of the 1970s, most are in a derelict state. This is much to the dismay – and hilarity – of the locals, who mostly belong to the Te Hoiere Seagull Fleet, and who organise races up and back on the same route. The rules of their event: any boat will do – the more eccentric the better (including a pirate ship made from re-purposed mussel buoys) – but it must be pushed by a British Seagull outboard motor. The races, held every two months and preceded by a ‘skite-yer-boat’ parade down the main street of Havelock, are hotly (and noisily) contested. THE LATEST ROGER HILL DESIGN is a dramatic departure from the multihulls he’s built his reputation on for more than 25 years. The custom 13.9m monohull motor yacht, named Tank will still have a number of Hill’s hallmarks, including the lightweight, durability of the DuFLEX panel system. Hill’s brief was to design a monohull motor yacht for a couple of previous clients who were intent on downsizing and using their boat more ‘casually’. “A key factor was power and fuel capacity for longer trips. Dreadnort Boats is a collaboration between Naval Architect Blair Lewis and Shipwright Stuart Dawe, who between them have a wealth of commercial and recreational aluminium boat design and fabrication experience. Boating reviewed the larger Dreadnort D7500 with its unusual dreadnought bow profile in its March edition. Dreadnort’s smaller V5500 CC (Centre Console) shares many familial design features with that model, including a long waterline length, the performance characteristics of a much bigger boat and an exceptional interior volume. But unlike the D7500, this boat is a centre console with Dreadnort’s ‘V’ (for Vertical) plumb bow profile. While hardly commonplace, plumb bows are becoming increasingly familiar to the New Zealand boating public, as they are increasingly used in local and imported boats both large and small. A gaff-rigged cutter of sublime beauty, its sails, its cordage, its hull, its entire being in fact, crafted from sterling silver. It’s the most impressive sailing trophy that’s held in New Zealand I reckon. Apart, perhaps, from the America’s Cup. Only this one is here to stay. This unique annual event, held for 20 years, was a tribute to Wrighty’s versatility. Every one of these very different boats evolved from his drawings and these ‘seeworthy’ craft were still sailing in New Zealand and Australian waters. How did this happen? In 1964, Alan Wright (‘Wrighty’) tutored the art of building wooden boats full-time at Auckland Technical Institute. Basic yacht design was also included in the course. So when one student, realising his tutor was not an expert in this field, asked: “What do you know about this subject?
