Nearly 40 years after the launch of the first high-performance Elliott 5.9 trailer-sailer, a fleet of these responsive little dinghies is now on the road – once again making its way to a series of regattas around the country. The 5.9 Traveller Series is a well-established New Zealand event, and this year’s programme began in April at Lake Rotoiti, hosted by the Bay of Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron. Sutherland and Bayly are partners in the fine dining restaurant Ahi in Commercial Bay and another more family-oriented restaurant in Henderson called The Grounds. The on-water vehicle for their new venture is a Nautitech 47 Power displacement catamaran, built in France and sold in New Zealand by Busfield Marine Brokers. Purekraft builds custom aluminium boats designed by HMD (Hall Marine Design). The company’s signature two-step sheerline typically combines with a big volume hull that’s full forward but with a deep entry that morphs to a moderate deadrise aft. The end result is a series of dry, seaworthy vessels that ride well and offer generous internal dimensions. A custom build was the only option for the owners of the striking orange-and-black Purekraft 800HT (hardtop) Heatwave. Friends Mike Keys and Dale McGuire had the boat built specifically around the needs of Mike’s 21-year-old son, a tetraplegic. What they wanted was something no “off-the-books” boat could deliver. As any boatie will appreciate, maintaining, berthing and operating the Trust’s fleet requires a massive commitment in funding and manpower. There were two major boatbuilding families in Lyttelton in those early days, the Millers and the Sinclairs, both with Scottish origins. The Millers are identified with the famous yacht Pastime. The Millers’ rivals were the Sinclairs – William Sinclair and his large number of descendants. In 2019 I wrote three Vintage Perspective articles about the Millers and Pastime, which is now close to being launched after a major restoration by Craig Wild at Tamahere. It is time for a companion piece on the Sinclairs. William Sinclair was born in 1822 in Caithness in northern Scotland. The creation of a Turkish team (Hayri Atak Architectural Design Studio – HAADS) the Eco-Floating Hotel takes its inspiration from a vortex and works a bit a like a dynamo, spinning slowly in the tide/current, converting the rotational energy into electricity. This offers guests a constantly changing perspective – and no, the movement won’t affect those with delicate tummies. The hotel takes 24 hours to complete a full rotation. Created as a Five-Star facility, the 35,000m2 hotel will have 152 rooms. Each has its own balcony and within the structure are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, spa, gym and a mini golf course. The hotel is accessed in three ways: through a 140° floating pier; disembarking from boats; and by helicopter (the helipad’s on the floating pier). Though…

A 12.4m demo-boat displacing 7.9 tonnes has been used by Yanmar to demonstrate its newly-developed hydrogen fuel cell system. When the International Maritime Organisation announced a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the end of this century, Yanmar was among the first companies to comply with environmental regulations with its development of dual-fuel marine engines. But looking to the future of powertrain technology, the company also developed a maritime fuel cell system that incorporates hydrogen fuel cell modules from Toyota’s MIRAI automobile. The system was installed into Yanmar’s EX38A FC pleasure boat for field testing. Two Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell modules and eight hydrogen tanks provided 250kW of power. Chefs Ben Bayly and Andrea Catalinni conjured up an amazing food experience aboard Nautiboy. The six-course meal was largely prepared in Nautibuoy’s spacious galley with help from the portable stainless-steel BBQ on the transom. We were treated to a selection of some of Ahi’s signature dishes, each showcasing the finest New Zealand ingredients, beautifully presented and accompanied by carefully chosen local beers and wines. The first course was a spectacular appetiser of tahr, wild-caught in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, served raw with fermented hot sauce. Called tahr tartare, it was visually striking and thoroughly delicious. The tahr was followed by crayfish tail halves, skewered and grilled on the BBQ, then smothered in tomato butter, crispy capers and pancetta. Yum! I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with dinghy sailing. I love it when it’s going well. But I resent and am scared of it in equal measures when I am cold, tired and faced with the prospect of a mark rounding and a downhill run to get back to shore. I didn’t sail as a child, but while my peers enjoyed OEs I discovered sailing and spent much of my twenties racing and crewing keelboats – including my own – before settling down to raise a family. SEALEGS INTERNATIONAL LIMITED has released plans for the world’s most compact amphibious production boat. At just 3.8m overall, the new tender will be powered on land by a Sealegs electric amphibious drive system designed to bring amphibious boating to the yacht tender market. The tender’s moulded fibreglass hull and decks will be paired with Hypalon inflatable tubes. Weighing less than 450kg and with a height of just 1m, the craft can be stowed in yacht transom garages, lazarettes or on deck. Bruce Toomer learned about fish smoking from Whitianga local Mike ‘Blink’ English, who went on to sell him Blink’s Smoke House in 2016. Bruce took what had been essentially a small-scale hobby business and turned it into a highly-regarded fish smoking institution, endorsed by locals and visiting anglers from all over. Although Blink was responsible for building the wood-burning smokehouse that produces such consistently high-quality smoked fish, it was Bruce who took the next step by really focussing on fish preparation, taste and presentation. In a show of support for ETNZ, a flotilla of 90 Riviera motor yachts with more than 600 Riviera family members and guests made for a spectacular sight as they steamed to the race track during the recent America’s Cup. The armada – one of the largest ever assembled in the 41-year history of Australia’s largest luxury motor yacht builder – was organised by New Zealand representative R Marine Flagship. Featuring vessels between 34 and 72 feet in length, the two-by-two configuration stretched more than 2km in length. An ABBA-themed Sealegs raced its way into the winner’s circle at this year’s Onetangi Beach Races on Waiheke Island. The team – a new entry at this annual event – was joined by two regular winners: the pistol-toting Fisher family and the Burridge (as Team NZ, complete with ‘foils’). I caught up with Sarah Barrell just as she was poised to take the helm of the Viaduct Harbour operation from JoŠ White, its manager for 17 years. Now, Briand is typically modest about his role in the design, which was built into Sweden’s 1977 Cup challenger, the 12-Metre Sverige. But he has always been fascinated by the America’s Cup. Back in 1978 and with no formal training, he opened up his own boat design office in La Rochelle on France’s Atlantic coast and immediately set about working on a 12-M of his own. His aim? To build a campaign for a French America’s Cup challenge. The Istanbul Canal – some 45km in length – would run north of Istanbul, linking the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. Construction is meant to begin mid-year. Engineers estimate it will take seven years to build and cost between US$9.3bn and $14.6bn. While there have been other forays into outboard diesels over the last decade, it is perhaps the Cox CXO300 that marks the emergence from the engine room and onto the transoms of boats around the world. For the first time we have a diesel outboard that can compete with the equivalent petrol engine on a scale that is most suited to today’s 7m-plus, deep-vee powerboat platforms. Over the last decade, British diesel engine manufacturer Cox Powertrain has put in a serious amount of R&D into getting the idea from prototype to production. Street’s a far-sighted man and had planned the sale of Foster’s for over six years, giving him plenty of time to plot his next move. “I’m no good at bridge, bowls or golf, but I have to have a challenge. Owned by Nelson’s Peter Murton, Blue Duck is no stranger to the Lake Rotoiti show – she’s been displayed there previously and has won various awards. But this year’s gong is a little special because – if the research is accurate – her new propulsion is her second electric system. The first was nearly a century earlier. This latest version marks yet another chapter in an extraordinary life. The little clinker’s been fitted with numerous propulsion systems over the years but, tantalisingly, the research suggests she was first electrically-powered when big, heavy batteries and equally big, heavy DC motors were only just becoming established in New Zealand.
