Kiwis may have voted against legalising dope, but the issue isn’t settled yet. You may not be allowed to skin up a fat one any time soon, but you could soon be setting sail in a tinnie or a hemp boat. As if that weren’t enough, it might also be built from old plastic drinks bottles, aluminium window frames, pineapple leaves, cork and old cardboard boxes. That’s because a number of determined innovators are breaking away from the near ubiquity of glass (or carbon) fibre lay-up in yacht hulls to offer less environmentally damaging alternatives. THE RECENT SANCTUARY Cove Boating Festival was a major success for Multihull Solutions, resulting in record sales for the company. The show, one of the only Asia-Pacific boat shows held this year due to Covid-19 cancellations across the industry, saw a constant stream of buyers at the Multihull Solutions stand. Interest was particularly strong in the Fountaine Pajot and ILIAD Catamarans brands – the ILIAD 50 power catamaran hosted hundreds of inspections during the event. At the close of the three-day show, Multihull Solutions had taken almost AUD$12.5 million in orders and conditional contracts pending sea trials across its range of sail and power multihulls. While his previous ride – the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795 – was great, it wasn’t quite what he wanted. That model is configured more as ‘family cruiser’ than ‘serious fishing boat’, and it lacks easy access to the bow area. And though the enclosed cabin area with four berths is perfect for extended family overnight trips, it reduced the available fishing space. Company founder Simon Minoprio’s philosophy was always to produce something special in aluminium: strong, wellbuilt trailer boats with modern styling and clean lines. Working with Bakewell-White Yacht Design, Minoprio came up with a range of boats between 5.15m and 9.09m LOA in four different configurations, all featuring plumb bows, long waterline lengths and lots of usable interior volume. Special attention has been paid to the chines, which provide hydrodynamic lift and stability on the plane and stability at rest. As we get ready to head out for a day’s fishing or sailing, checking the weather forecast is as much a habit as a cup of tea. Finding there will be the odd shower is useful but learning that the 10-knot wind in the morning will increase to 20 knots later is more meaningful, and experience tells us what to expect. Listening to the Coastguard’s ‘now-casting’ reports from around the coast adds greatly to our decisions whether to go out or when to head into shelter. The fate of the cars became clear a few weeks ago when the VB10000 heavy-lift crane – after delays caused by Covid-19 and the hurricane season – was finally able to begin lifting pieces of the capsized vessel on to waiting barges. Using a 75mm anchor chain in a ‘sawing’ motion, salvagers first cut the wreck into eight pieces weighing between 2,700 and 4,000 tons each. These sections are being transported to a recycling facility on shore. Owned by US engineering firm Versabar, the VB10000 was originally designed for erecting and decommissioning offshore oil and gas platforms. I AM WRITING in the hope that one of your readers may be able to provide some information about the Lindstrom 28 – and my restoration project. It’s a fun project and I want to fill in the history. I know the boats were built in Christchurch – and that some had cabin top and others were the sports deck version. I am specifically trying to find more information about the builder – and how many were built. The photo shows my boat – Magic – I have no idea what year she was built. Napier Sailing Club is looking a lot smarter these days following the recent development of a new breastwork and wharf. The structure – comprising a walkway and jetty – stretches past the clubhouse and is a pleasant addition to the Ahuriri walkway. Construction began in November 2019 to replace the old timber structure which after 40 years had become a safety issue. Built by the Lattey Group, the work required 8m steel piles at 2.5m centres, with tilt slab concrete sections fitted behind to form the wall. Concrete slabs were laid to form the walkway. Each of the piles has been sponsored by a club member. Their names are engraved on small plaques and, collectively, these read like a Who’s Who of the Napier Sailing Club. Caribbean boats carry a large dose of Bertram DNA, since International Marine produced Bertram motor yachts for many years before developing the Caribbean range. This Bertram lineage is evident in the classic lines of the Caribbean 420 Express, the sedan version of the popular Caribbean 40 Flybridge (Boating NZ, August 2012). To my eye the 420 Express looks sleeker and more stylish and Caribbean has added some nice detailing too, like improved, neoprene-backed stainless-steel beltings. Like most observers, my familiarity with hydrodynamics and aerodynamics extends to being able to spell them correctly. For me, this 36th America’s Cup – with its radical AC75 foiling monohulls – blends the two disciplines more tightly than ever before in the event’s 170-year history. The first ZeroJet electric jet system has been fitted to a 3m tender from local manufacturer Offshore Cruising Tenders (OCT), and performance is spectacular. Top speed is 25 knots (if you’re brave enough) though a docile 12-knot cruise speed is more sensible (and offers a longer run-time). And as with any electric installation, torque is instantaneous – acceleration is eye-watering. But let’s back up a moment. You don’t give any thought to your fridge temperature at home, open the door and yes everything is cold. On a boat, if your fridge system works off the engine, then you will have to run the engine at least twice a day to try to maintain a stable temperature. A hot day with the engine not running, the temperature in the fridge quickly increases to a point of food spoilage and warm drink. China’s newest submersible – the Fendouzhe (Striver) – has set a new dive record for the country, reaching the bottom of the western Pacific’s Mariana Trench at 10,909m. This depth is some 18m short of the world record for the deepest dive set by American Victor Vescovo (10,927m) in the Mariana Trench in May 2019. Fendouzhe carried three men in her record-breaking expedition, taking nearly four hours to reach the ocean floor. The 37m Tauranga-built motoryacht The Beast was judged the best displacement motor yacht at the prestigious 2020 Boat International World Superyacht Awards in November, in the below 499 GT category. Famous for its surfing, fishing, kite boarding and other water sports, fast-growing Raglan is a popular weekend and holiday destination with more than 3,000 permanent residents. The harbour covers around 33km2 at high tide (9km2 at low tide) and experiences a 2–4m tidal range. With a narrow opening to the turbulent Tasman Sea, strong tidal flows and sandbars at its entrance, boats leaving or entering the harbour must cross Raglan’s infamous bar, which often throws up challenging conditions. Raglan Volunteer Coastguard members know the harbour and its bar intimately, as well as the great sweep of coastline to either side of it. The 80km canal’s system of carriages and rails – in Poland’s Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship region some 240km north of Warsaw – has operated since 1860 and took 16 years to build. It comprises five inclined ‘planes’ that interconnect a series of canals and lakes and it’s widely considered one of Poland’s ‘seven wonders.’ Engineers opted to use the rail-and-carriage system because the topography was too steep for conventional locks. Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia commissioned the canal system to connect what was then East Prussia to the Baltic Sea – a calculated move to boost trade in the region.
