This month’s feature about the sinking of the yacht Essence off Cape Brett in October last year – Anatomy of a Rescue – is one of the most harrowing accounts of survival at sea I’ve ever read. It’s written by Bruce Goodwin – one of the four crew members. The process of writing about and reliving the experience, he acknowledges, proved to be cathartic – it helped with the healing. Australian photographer Jasmine Carey’s shot of a humpback mother sleeping beside her twoweek-old baby – taken near the Kingdom of Tonga – has won her the US$120,000 grand prize at this year’s (ninth) Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) in Dubai. This year’s competition was themed Water. Water, said HIPA organisers, was man’s oldest friend on the planet. “All the inhabitants of Earth know water, but some fear it. The relationship of a fisherman with water is not like that of someone who does not know how to swim. Christchurch’s Pleasant Point Yacht Club celebrates its centenary next February and the committee is extending an invitation to all previous members to attend the club’s celebrations. Originally called the Boat Club when it was established in 1921 on the shores of the estuary in an area then known as Pleasant Point Domain, it was renamed Pleasant Point Boating Club in 1924. Five years later it moved to the western shore to an area of mud flats (now Rat Island) at the mouth of the Avon River. The land was improved and over the years the club facilities were built, introducing a summer-long sailing programme of racing. An exciting new initiative will expand on the world-leading training currently provided by the NZ Marine & Composites (NZMAC) Transitional Industry Training Organisation. Recent reforms of the vocational education sector, which include disestablishing Industry Training Organisations (ITOs), have provided the marine and composites industries an opportunity to create a dedicated training academy. NZMAC will make an application to NZQA (NZ Qualifications Authority) to register a Private Training Establishment (PTE) called the NZ Marine & Composites Training Academy. This new facility will be able to expand and deliver far more for the marine and composites industries than the old organisation. For apprentices and trainees entering or transitioning to the academy, it will deliver support on and off the job, education and training to achieve a seamless integration between the old and…

Maritime NZ (MNZ) has announced $844,249 in funding for 22 safer boating initiatives throughout New Zealand – the most ever distributed – aimed at reducing recreational boating fatalities and injuries. MNZ Director Keith Manch says boaties contribute to the funding through their activities, given that it is drawn from the Fuel Excise Duty (FED) on petrol, and that the grants are crucial for organisations involved at the grass-roots building a safer boating culture across New Zealand communities. “It’s an investment – teach someone to boat safely – and you’re protecting their family and friends too.” Included are some innovative approaches to promoting water safety – such as jetski training for people in the upper South Island, greater engagement with boaties through the Old4New lifejacket upgrade campaign and expansion of community…
