Germany has agreed to return a 15th century artefact – a Stone Cross – it removed from the Namibian coastline in the 1890s. The 3.5m navigation mark was erected by Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão on the treacherous West African coastline in 1498. It was taken to Germany in 1893 after the area became a German imperial protectorate. The cross has been on display at Berlin’s German Historical Museum ever since. The cross bears the Portuguese coat of arms and featured on numerous old-world maps. In June 2017, the Namibian government formally requested its return. Germany’s Minister of State for Media and Culture, Monica Gruetters, says the return of the cross showed that the country was committed to accounting for its colonial past.…

The International Whaling Commission is calling on the government to stop commercial fishing with set nets and trawling in the range of Maui dolphins. In a recently-released report the commission says it holds ‘grave concerns’ for critically-endangered Maui dolphins. Forest & Bird marine conservation advocate Anton van Helden says as there are only about 63 Maui dolphins in the world the commission’s message should be heeded. “New Zealand is usually on the side of whales and dolphins with our decades-long call to end whaling, but this time it’s the International Whaling Commission telling us to sort ourselves out. It’s time to stop fishing activities that pose a risk of endangered dolphins being caught as bycatch in set nets in New Zealand waters.” Last year the commission issued recommendations to help…

Until you see one, the idea of an iceberg can seem quite academic. Seen for the first time it will look astonishingly white. This whiteness comes from the bubbles of air trapped in the ice and will tend more towards blue if the ice has been compressed in its formation. These bubbles are fascinating to climate scientists as they are perfect samples of the atmosphere from times past. The Antarctic ice sheet, where these icebergs are formed, is up to 4km thick in places and this can provide examples of atmosphere back a good 200,000 years or so. That’s the message from Ports of Auckland. It points out that Auckland’s rapidly-increasing population is projected to add a million more people to the city by 2050. That translates into greater demand for imported products – with more containers arriving on bigger ships. Currently, those ships cannot enter Auckland’s harbour because the existing shipping channel is too shallow. Ports of Auckland is applying for a consent to dredge parts of the channel to give the bigger vessels access to the port. It is now compiling technical studies and undertaking stakeholder consultation, hoping to lodge the application with Auckland Council in October. Weber Marine has successfully secured the build of an Elite 18m Sportfisher for a local owner. Braden Weber and his team are no strangers to the Elite brand, having worked on many when employed at previous yards. Equipment will be the latest and greatest with a focus on electronics to assist the client’s passion for fishing. Seafarers used to refer to anyone who had worked their way up from the deck to the skipper’s chair on the bridge as having ‘come up through the hawsepipe.’ The rat which colonised our yacht, Southern Cross, took the same route up the mooring line, but she wasn’t after the skipper’s job – all she wanted was a warm, dry home for winter. The spirit of the Whitbread Round the World Race is back with the announcement of the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, a retro event starting from a European port in September 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original race. My chance to try the boat, along with a second Centurion in a more standard spec, came on Lake Wanaka in early July. Over two days we were blessed with a bit of sunshine between rain squalls and a very frosty morning that put paid to plans of a sunrise photo shoot, since the road covers were frozen to the boats after overnight rain. Flat conditions on the lake didn’t do this 6.5m boat justice. Houses come with addresses and cars are adorned with fancy little labels – but an owner gets to name his boat. One boat, two mates, three years – they form the tripod that’s resulted in the unlikely transformation of a sorry, rotting derelict into a gleaming work of art. Auckland’s Thomas Rutter and Jordan Chilcott are tight friends. They met, aged 13, on their first day at Westlake Boys’ High School in 2006. Logan Dunning Beck and Oscar Gunn have won their first big international regatta together, taking out the 49er class at Kiel Week in Germany. The pair, who have been sailing together for the last two years, picked up World Cup Series silver medals in Hyeres and Enoshima in 2018 and they also led at last year’s sailing world championships in Aarhus for a handful of days before eventually finishing seventh. Their second in Kiel’s medal race was enough for them to finish ahead of Poland’s Lukasz Przybytek and Pawel Kolodzinski, with James Peters and Fynn Sterritt of Great Britain third. Nilsson started the business as a sideline, originally operating from his basement in Auckland’s Roberts Road. In the early days his very understanding wife would operate the lathes and mills to do the machining while he was at his day job. In the evenings he would assemble the winches from the parts she’d made and set up the machines again for the next day’s machining. It did not take long before he gave up his job to work full time in winch manufacturing. Shipbuilders at Poplar, London, her rivetted steel construction was transported in kitset form to Whanganui. Originally named Aotea, she was operated by the Whanganui Settlers River Steamship Co. until 1902, when she was sold to Alexander Hatrick and renamed Waimarie – the name means ‘good fortune – peaceful waters.’ Just after the turn of the century the Whanganui River was something of an international tourism mecca. Waimarie was known as the ‘Queen of the River’ and tourists flocked aboard to experience ‘one of the world’s greatest river journeys’.
