It was the sporty but spacious Leader 40 we came to experience on a beautiful summer’s day at Auckland’s Orakei Marina. A blend of Italian design and French building prowess, the Leader’s a beautiful piece of engineered art. Despite the heritage they are not afraid to get down and dirty though, and the smaller Leader 36 recently featured on the TV series Fish of the Day with Clarke Gayford. The Leader 40’s powered by a pair of Volvo D6-370 diesels driving Volvo Duoprop sternlegs. When he passed away suddenly last year, Farrier left an admirable legacy of well-designed boats that have won some prestigious awards and many hearts. This legacy is built on the power of well-thought-out boats perfected by equally well-thought-out detail. As a young engineering student, Farrier launched his first trimaran in 1969 after two years of hard work. He had been in the market for a small keeler but his engineering mind had balked at their inherent inefficiency. He endured a few hidings in his new boat offshore and crewed on a 38-foot keeler bound for Tonga, which further refined his design thinking on what an efficient yacht could be. Thames man James Moore had long wanted to own a Rayglass 2500 to replace Limitless, the 1998 Rayglass 730 he used to own. After discussions with Rayglass service manager Tony Yurjevic, he decided he’d find and purchase a slightly tired, older model and have Tony and his team undertake a modest refurbishment to bring it up to spec. By definition, large, steel-hulled vessels project a magnetic field around them – a field typically acquired during the construction process where there is lots of cutting, hammering and welding. As they move through the water their magnetic fields interact with a much larger magnetic field – the earth’s. This interaction gives every vessel a distinctive ‘magnetic signature’ – easily spotted by other ships, submarines or aircraft equipped with ‘magnetic anomaly detection’ (MAD) equipment. Logically, if it were possible to minimise a vessel’s magnetic signature, detection by the enemy would be much more difficult – and much better for clandestine operations. Degaussing and deperming are techniques used to neutralise a vessel’s magnetic signatures. Hall Marine Design (HMD) has made a name for itself designing power boats for others, including several well-known New Zealand trailer boat manufacturers. However, HMD is probably best known for its bigger stuff – commercial and fishing vessels – which still make up the largest part of the Tauranga-based company’s design business. Over 50% of its design work is for clients offshore. But a few years ago, Jarrod Hall and his team decided to get into manufacturing their own boats under the Purekraft brand. It all began in 1895, on the shores of Devonport when a little sailing club was founded for those yachties who rallied against the white-collar option. The North Shore Sailing Club, as it was known back then, was the perfect way to get on the water and race in sailboats that are now considered classics of the yachting world. W.E. Bennett was the first Commodore of the club and, in its inaugural year he presented a blue silk pennant embroidered with the letters ‘NSSC’ for that first season’s racing. W.A ‘Wilkie’ Wilkinson’s fast mullet boat-type Hinemoa won the pennant and up until 2016, this 121-year-old memento took pride and place in full view of visitors. The biennial (every two years) MyState Bank Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart proves the attraction that timber boats can generate. It’s by far the largest event for timber boats in the Southern Hemisphere. Held over four days, the festival displays more than 500 timber boats, along with seminars and working displays. It’s organised and run by a passionate group of experienced sailors, boatbuilders, maritime historians and enthusiasts, many who have been with the festival since its inception in 1994. Over 225,000 people attended the last one in 2017, with over half of these coming from either mainland Australia or overseas, with an obvious benefit for Hobart and Tasmanian tourism. The hardtop is popular for good reason. It offers excellent protection from the elements and there’s heaps of space inside. Indeed, space is something the 660 offers in spades. follow the race www.ssanz.co.nz This year’s event is the third edition of what is widely-considered one of the country’s toughest and most challenging races. It was first held in 1990 and again in 2012. To date 13 yachts and 26 sailors have completed this race. So far, no one has completed the race twice. Organised by the Short-handed Sailing Association of New Zealand (SSANZ), the race comprises four legs, an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of mainland New Zealand. It starts in temperate Auckland, around subtropical Northland, then down through the 40s into the Southern Ocean, before returning via the east coast of New Zealand to Auckland. As the sea warms, our larger harbours and estuaries experience an influx of different fish species. Of most interest to residents and holidaymakers in northern and central New Zealand are snapper and kingfish, along with kahawai. Snapper (and other species) enter harbours to exploit their plentiful food resources, moving into shallow water and up into the mangrove creeks with the tide. You might be surprised at how many fish utilise these areas and how big some of them are. But they tend to be easily spooked in this environment, so catching them is a fun challenge. Flounder is another popular summer species. After serving his apprenticeship with Harvey & Lang, Percy Voss went out on his own in 1922. Initially working from Poore St, Freemans Bay, in 1937 Voss built a shed and slipway on land leased from Auckland Council on Hamer St. He continued operating from here until his death in 1972, with Sanford’s taking over the lease in 1978. Auckland Council bought out the lease some years ago and, through Panuku (ex-Waterfront Auckland), owns the land, shed and slipway. The concept of using the Percy Voss boatyard for traditional boatbuilding has been around for more than six years and been championed by several notable people including Sir Bob Harvey.
