Isn’t that a bit of a strange place for superyachts?” asked my editor, as I presented plans for a trip to the southeast coast of Africa, visions of lemurs swinging from baobab trees playing in my imagination. The answer, of course, was yes it is. Change, however, is afoot with the development of luxury tourism on the Indian Ocean island, and there are now few destinations more exciting for yachts looking to get off the beaten track. Owners in St Barths over the winter might have noticed it feeling a little more cramped than usual. According to BOATPro data, the island’s capital city of Gustavia hosted a record 165 yachts (24 metres and above) for this year’s famous New Year’s Eve celebration, up considerably from 139 last year. This year’s surge in St Barths traffic followed a 10 per cent increase in the number of yachts migrating west across the Atlantic since last year (likely due to the Red Sea’s raised security profile). My family has always been in boating, but mostly freshwater; we spent a lot of time on the Colorado River in Arizona. A boat for the ocean was always on the horizon though. Change does not need to be radical to make an impact in design. The shape of a couple of windows can change the appearance of any structure. How did Wally change the tender market? In 2003 when we Introduced the wallytender at 45 feet (13.7m), tenders were smaller; even yachts of 60 and 70 metres had six- or seven-metre tenders. At the time, I was living on my sailing boats. At 29 and 32 metres, they didn't have the facilities to carry a big boat. Ever since I read Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey at school, I’ve worshipped Odysseus. He was the Greek genius who cooked up the idea of the Trojan Horse to capture the city of Troy and defeat the Trojans. So I was determined to follow in his footsteps – or his wake – from Troy, on Turkey’s Aegean coast, to his island kingdom, Ithaca in the Ionian Sea.
