After a great response from BBC Introducing Shropshire in May, the FOXYWOMBAT crew look set to take Brighton by storm. The New Venture Theatre – recently lauded as one of the best places for exciting independent theatre along the south coast 1 – launches its 2021/22 season in October with a revival of Amelia Bullmore’s modern classic Di and Viv and Rose. “During the pandemic, it was amazing to watch independent bookshops respond,” William Shaw, author and co-founder of The Book Makers, tells me. “Many of them relied on the networks they’d built up to survive.” While internet shopping inarguably indulges laziness and provides extensive choice, it’s often a soulless exercise. There’s no human interaction or sense of belonging when you click to checkout. Scores of independent bookshops were nimble enough to adapt to 2020’s challenging trade conditions. Exciting things are going on at South Lanes Studios. Having spoken to them after the studio reopened a couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of returning to check out what’s happened in the time since. The South Lanes crew have hit the ground running and big things are on the way; the brand-new Studio 1 is now open (as of Mon 13 Sept, so really brand-spanking-new) and the other rehearsal and recording spaces have all been tweaked and tinkered with to make them the best they can be. I couldn’t stand working in the library during my undergraduate degree. The air of studiousness that pervades the hallways made me feel claustrophobic and irritated. Who are these people that can sit around for hours on end, surrounded by all these books and the clattering of fingers on keyboards? Certainly, I was not one of these people. The clown is a different figure for different people. To some, a cheery children’s character materializes at their mention. To others, the connotations of horror movie villains wriggle into their heads. To one Brightonian, clowning has nothing to do with fear, and everything to do with vulnerability, playfulness and mindfulness. One in five UK adults experienced some form of depression this year, an increase from late 2020 and a statistic that has more than doubled since the beginning of the pandemic. Brighton is home to the most beautiful, fabulous and inspiring people in the world, in my very unbiased opinion. This month I came across one such person whilst writing a piece about the Brightonians providing relief to those devastated by natural disasters in Haiti. The co-ordinator of this mighty effort was Ed Heller, a local chef who nourishes hundreds of Brightonians every day! Ed operates The Ethicurean Guild, a food business which partners with some of Brighton’s best loved venues. The private rental market is currently very precarious for most. The number of households privately renting doubled between 2007 and 2017, with rent in England hitting a record high during the pandemic. Tenants are often pushed into unstable rental agreements, where they are made to stump up large deposits before even moving in, and wait unreasonable lengths of time to have their deposits returned when they move out.
