Tell me about Slack City’s origins… Ideas for Slack City started bubbling around Christmas 2019 after reflecting on 20 years since the launch of totallyradio, the UK’s longest serving internet radio station, and 30 years since its precursor, Brighton’s legendary Festival Radio, which reinvented radio in the city. In that time the station had some incredible highs, but we felt, even though it has some brilliant radio shows, it no longer fitted in with Brighton’s unique creative outlook. That unique creative outlook is not found anywhere else in the UK and, understandably, us Brighton residents are incredibly passionate and proud of it – it has become such a draw for so many creatives moving to Brighton. From speaking to musicians, we learn that the vast folk community lost a huge part of itself when the festivals and concerts were cancelled due to Coronavirus. Online gigs aren’t something new, however, the influx of folk musicians hosting or taking part in them is. There has been such a high number that it raises a question. Will these online concerts remain part of the industry or will they fade away once festivals and live gigs are allowed once more? I first began to experience the impact that dietary choice can have on one’s health way back in my youth. I’d been diagnosed with a form of arthritis at just 9 years of age after persistent swelling in my left knee began to restrict my mobility. Like most kids of that age, I was constantly on the move and aside from playing football and cricket, which I loved, I was like an early version of Forrest Gump because I would run everywhere. I remember my father taking me to see a consultant who decided that my leg should be entombed in a plaster cast for 6 weeks. A Brighton-based film company has caught a big pharmaceutical CEO admitting that he doesn’t want countries who can’t afford the COVID vaccine to be able to make their own, because there’s no profit in it. The chief executive officer was recorded before he was aware that the camera was rolling saying “where’s the money in that?” in reply to a question asking if it would be better to vaccinate the world and get rid of the disease altogether? This shockingly blunt admission was part of a two-minute clip that appropriately went viral in June as part of a scripted campaign for vaccine equality starring Bafta winning comedian Jolyon Rubinstein.
