Good Knife Law News Knife enthusiasts in Hawaii and Louisiana received good news on the front lines of cut this past May. As reported by Knife Rights, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green signed HB2342 into law May 14 repealing the bans on the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession and transportation of butterfly/balisong knives, automatics/switchblades, gravity knives, swords and spears. The ban repeal includes brass knuckles, which also covers trench knives and karambits. However, concealed carry of the knives in question remains banned, so to be legal they must be carried openly. Also, the new law increases penalties if the knives are used in the commission of a crime. The success or failure of podcasts depends mostly on the host and the guest, so when Aaron Law-vere invited me to be on The Good Ol’ Blades podcast this past May, I must admit I had some misgivings. Those misgivings were misplaced, though, as Aaron’s professional approach put me at ease, with things seeming to go well for the most part. However, when I listened to the podcast afterward, I realized I had made a glaring misstatement. For centuries, the hamon has served as a mark of excellence in the forging of blades. Conspicuous by its picturesque line generally dissecting the midsection of a differentially heat-treated blade, it demonstrates a skill set highly valued among top bladesmiths and swordsmiths. Moreover, the difference between a good hamon and one that doesn’t hit the mark can help the maker, owner and user in understanding the prospective performance of the blade itself. Basically, think of a hamon as the equator between the hard and softer or more malleable areas of the blade. Everything above the hamon is softer, which translates as making the back of the blade malleable and thus tougher. In other words, the blade will bend but not break. The true hamon produced by the ancient practice of differential heat treating that originated centuries ago in Japan is becoming more common knowledge. However, it’s worth a moment to hear the professionals describe their craft. Simply put, Steve Schwarzer offers, “It is the differentially heat treated blade where one part is much harder than the other. Japanese swordmakers were looking for thousands of years for a steel that could get a super cutting edge and not break. The hard cutting edge needed something to support it, and the back would work like a spring to support the cutting edge when quenched as the clay slowed down the transition of austenite to martensite.” According to Mike Quesenberry, most bladesmiths like to see their hamon work about one-third of the way up…

To throw a competition throwing axe, follow these steps: 1) Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and facing the target; 2) Hold the axe with both hands, with your dominant hand closer to the head of the axe; 3) Bring the axe back over your head, making sure the axe head is facing the target; 4) Step forward with your non-dominant foot as you swing the axe forward; 5) Release the axe when it reaches the top of your swing (eye level), aiming for the target bullseye; 6) Follow through with your swing, releasing the axe with both hands and allowing it to rotate through the air; 7) Watch as the axe sticks into the target, hopefully hitting the bullseye, and; 8) Retrieve the axe and repeat the…

Kevin Casey may have hit on a great idea for knives with both a custom touch and an antique look and feel. Taking some old yet inexpensive late 19th/early 20th-century dinner knives with mother-of-pearl handles and silver ferrules, he replaced the original blades with those forged of assorted patterns of his feather damascus. The result, the Little Feathers, went fast at the Solvang Show, with two selling individually and five going to one shrewd buyer. Kevin said similar versions of the original antique knives are available on eBay, Etsy, at jewelry stores, flea markets and the like. He cleaneded the insides of the ferrules with acetone before epoxying his damascus blades into them.
