What Might’ve Been It was wonderful to see Jim Schmidt’s Viking Dagger gracing the cover of the April BLADE®. As I read the accompanying article about his work, it reminded me of my experience with him from several years ago. I met Mr. Schmidt at one of the many custom knife shows that I used to attend. At this particular show he had one of his Goblin folders on display at his table. What a marvelous piece of workmanship it was! I was so moved that I asked him how I might be able to get one for my collection. It was a “hawk” of a good time. Tomahawks have been around thousands of years. Small enough to choke up on for finer work, they can handle larger chopping chores too and carry easily on a belt or pack. The great thing about the Spyderco Genzow Hatchethawk and Cold Steel Rifleman’s Hawk is that they have hammer polls. The hammer poll allows the user to drive in wood or steel stakes. They also work great for driving in nails. WARNING: Keep the blade edge covered while hammering (both hawks come with edge covers). NAILING IT Testing the hammer polls first, I positioned three nails on each side of a 2x8 board and tested for ease of hammering and accuracy indexing. The cover knife made by Bill Ruple is a custom congress pattern, one of the most traditional of all pocketknives. One on each end, the main blades are a straight-edge sheepfoot pattern with a long nail nick, and the other a spear point. The smaller blades are pen and modified straight-edge coping patterns. Blade steel is CPM 154 stainless. The shield with the maker’s surname, fileworked liners and fluted bolsters are all 416 stainless steel. The scales are Remington jigged bone. As the interframe folder phenomenon started to move to the end of its run circa 1990, there was a small window of opportunity for another type of knife to gain a foothold. Such knives had been in existence for hundreds of years around the world. However, it wasn’t until 1973 when BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame® member Bill Moran popularized forged blades featuring damascus steel that the average custom knife buyer became aware of such knives. Those who start using a product or technology as soon as it becomes available are referred to as early adopters. Dew Hara goes for newness, originality, balance and feel in his knife designs, and he achieves both and more in his Getsuga fixed blade. Japanese for crescent, Getsuga features a 5-inch blade of M390 stainless steel with a portion hollowed out in both it and the handle to contain a black torpedo-looking piece with five holes. Dew said originally the piece was a mechanism to open the back side of the knife to remove the blade. He could not get the mechanism to work the way he wanted, though, so he abandoned the idea.
