Autos and Dream Stuff The article about automatic knives in the August BLADE® was most interesting (“60th Anniversary of The Big Mistake” by BLADE field editor Mike Haskew, page 36). Long, long ago I grew up in a small farming community in East Central Illinois. We all had switchblades. Nobody ever got stabbed or threatened with them. We did occasionally stick ourselves playing “Stretch ’Em,” but never bad enough to tell our mothers. That would have been a horrible fate. As the article pointed out, it’s not the tool, it’s the decay of a well-mannered society that’s the problem. What a shame. Among Jim Schmidt’s top pupils is the artist known as Dellana, an outstanding knifemaker in her own right who had the distinct honor of having Schmidt emulate one of her knifemaking ideas. Schmidt passed away in 2000 but not before becoming one of the top ABS master smiths/knifemakers ever. Despite the passage of almost 20 years, his knives remain among the most collectible anywhere. Last issue he was the focus of our “Past Masters” series. We did not have room in that issue to mention the lesson Dellana delivered, but we do now. The gold dots on Dellana’s custom folder blades—as well as on the blades of a number of other makers who employ them today—are known as “Dellana Dots.” The dots are an artistic alternative to nail nicks for…

Slip joints are a joy to behold. With today’s decreased emphasis on tactical knives and a tendency to spread their wings in other directions, many manufacturers are exploring slip joints, exposing the non-locking folders to a new generation of cutlery customers. Some of those consumers, in turn, have had their eyes opened to the custom end of the market where higher-end slip joints await. There is an up-tick in both factory and custom slip joints. Meanwhile, not only are traditional patterns taking off, modern designs are, too. ETHAN JACK The knife bug bit Tracy LaRock at an early age. During a Patagonian fly-fishing trip in Argentina, my wife, Marlene, and I decided to take an afternoon off from angling and visit the nearby town of San Martin de los Andes. Our guide, Pablo, told us of a knifemaker in town who made traditional Argentinian knives, as well as about an art gallery worth visiting. The maker was a very charming man who informed us that he had learned silversmithing from an artist whose work we would see in the gallery. We enjoyed our interaction and learned a lot about a tradition of knife-making of which we knew little. After a stroll around a very charming town, we headed to the gallery. Babies it was cold outside—but not too cold for this native Wisconsin/Tennessee transplant to test a couple of sharp cookies by CR Marquis Knives and Allan Reid’s Cut Throat Custom Knives. The two fixed blades fall into the general-purpose, all-around using knife category. Their blade shapes are different—harpoon (Marquis) and clip point (Cut Throat)—but they can handle a wide variety of chores. The temperature had dropped to 33°F and it was raining. I wore my Kevlar gloves for two reasons: cold hands and to reduce the chance of cutting my cold fingers. “My everyday carry knife since 2015 has been the Spyderco Para Military 2. Back in 2004 when I was deployed to Manas Air Base in Kyrgyzstan, Spyderco was giving limited numbers of knives to service members who were overseas. I was too late to get one but I never forgot the company’s generosity, and vowed to get one of its knives. Ten years later I bought the Spyderco Tenacious, which I was very happy with. The only knife that could replace it was another Spyderco a year later or so, the Para Military 2, which I have used relentlessly even though it is the most expensive knife I own. ABS master smith John Horrigan was the big winner as top blade-smiths and makers showed their latest knives to an appreciative gathering in search of sharp stuff during the Arkansas Custom Knife Show Feb. 15-16 at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas. The bowie is often called “America’s knife.” So it was that when John Gulso gave his bowie a san-mai blade boasting a modified likeness of the Stars and Stripes, the knife practically named itself. It also was a natural for this issue’s cover. John said he had always been impressed with the leading examples of mosaic damascus but noticed how even the best ones had some deformation in the pattern. “That’s because by the time [the makers] tile it out, it’s almost impossible to keep from deforming the initial pattern,” he said.
