One of the most widespread owl species in the world, the Short-eared breeds on Arctic tundra across high latitudes of North America, Europe, and Asia, as far south as California and northern China. It also has resident populations in two regions of South America, north and south of the continuous rain forest of the Amazon basin, including most of the southern half of the continent. Wintering birds from Europe and Asia regularly reach northern Africa and southern India. Short-eareds are also residents on many oceanic island groups, including Hawai’i, the Galapagos, the Falklands, and parts of the Caribbean.
