BIRD vocalisations are rich and varied, from elaborate songs to simple calls. They have one thing in common in that they communicate something. To do this effectively, they are all different. This is great for birders, many of whom like to ‘bird by ear’ – especially when in forests, where seeing the birds can be difficult. Birds hear in the frequency range of 2,000-5,000 Hz (and no more than 10 kHz), while the range of human hearing is typically between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. Sounds with high frequencies can always be heard above lower sounds, while those with low frequencies will travel further much further.
