Bardsey Island, or Ynys Enlli in Welsh, is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is designated as a National Nature Reserve (NNR), a Special Protection Area (SPA), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory (BBFO) was established in 1953 and this year, 2023, celebrates its 70th anniversary. As well as recording bird migration and the monitoring and censusing of the island’s avifauna and other wildlife, BBFO was instrumental in the purchase and protection of the island, and encourages interest in birds, wildlife and the island through its award-winning young birders and university weeks, educational guided walks and talks, numerous publications, internships and volunteering.
