But instead of stealth and surprise, the Merlin opts for pure speed and agility. Shape-wise it looks a bit like a miniature Peregrine. As a new year dawns, the world seems a very different place compared to just 12 months ago. Many aspects of our lives have changed, but one constant remains – birds. We’re birdwatchers, therefore birds are a big part of our lives, but I would wager they are now more important to us than ever before. I’ve just spent a few minutes watching a succession of Coal Tits coming to the sunflower seeds in the feeder, an avian tag team of seed-snatchers, their white head markings gleaming in the morning sunshine, as they fly in and then fly out again. It is difficult to go birdwatching in much of the UK without encountering ‘naturalised’ birds. These are birds which are not strictly native to the country, but have escaped from collections, or from ‘farms’, or have been deliberately introduced into the country, and have now become established with self-sustaining populations. Sometimes, we are not even aware that the birds we arewatching derive from ‘non-wild’ populations, and several species exist in the wider country with a mix of truly ‘wild’ populations and naturalised communities (think Barnacle Geese or even Greylag Geese, or Gadwalls). One of my favourite countries for birding is Israel. It is on the radar of many birders, owing to the phenomenal migration that can be witnessed, all thanks to its geographical positioning as a bottleneck on the south-western shores of the Mediterranean Sea. I have enjoyed many fabulous trips to Eilat and the nearby Negev Desert, watching incredible numbers of raptors spilling overhead; and exploring urban Eilat, as well as the numerous wadis, for a host of exciting migrant species. If your birding takes you to challenging environments or you’re just plain clumsy, this phone may pique your interest. It’s in its second generation and is significantly less expensive than its £649 predecessor. But does it perform? The blurb says it can cope with drops and immersion in water (35 mins at 1.5m) - qualities every clumsy birder will welcome. This phone doesn’t need a case. THE MOTH FROM OZ The size and shape of a little fingernail, the remarkable Light Brown Apple Moth is the only species of moth that I have found in my garden every month of the year. Yet this subtly attractive creature shouldn’t be here at all. Native to Australia, the first UK record came from a Cornish garden centre in 1936. Gradually it spread eastwardsbefore exploding in abundance and range this century. Fears that it would devastate commercial fruit crops have not materialised, so its right to remain has not been challenged. There is nothing quite like a walk in the woods in autumn. The pattern of the leaf litter is a thing of immense beauty. Nature creates pleasing forms and consistent shapes of leaves, lichen, acorn cups and moss, then scatters them on the floor in a mosaic more abstract than Jackson Pollock and exquisitely pointillist; composed of perfectly shaped tesserae of many-colours, Sweet Chestnut’s spiky outer cases, fungi, acorns, twigs and all. It is suffused with the smell of earth and pepper, so profound one can almost taste it, while every bough and mound of moss invites you to savour their sumptuous textures of velvet, cashmere or Moroccan leather. It’s that time of year again, when you try to see those last few species to complete your #My200BirdYear list, and then turn your attention to getting your new list off to a flying start. This year, though, things have obviously been rather different. All of us have been affected by lockdowns, some more than others, and seeing 200 species of bird is pretty difficult if you’re having to stay close to home. It’s not impossible, though, if you’re lucky enough to live in an area of varied habitat, reasonably close to a coast – read Mike Weedon’s column on page 16 to see what a gallant effort he made. If we re divided by language, the UК and the USA (or at least its TV and film industries) are united in a cavalier approach to the use of bird songs and calls. Great Northern Diver is a good example. Because it’s such an evocative call, it gets chucked in even when it’s wildly out of place, to create a sense of eeriness, maybe, or of wildness and loneliness. It’s particularly out of place in UK productions. The call of the Red-tailed Hawk, a very common North American raptor, also pops up in UK productions. What was the initial inspiration for the book? Was it one you felt you HAD to write? For my previous book, The Long Spring, I chose a simple narrative, a series of journeys tracking the arrival of spring south to north, through Europe. That enabled me to weave in other narratives, so that I could do justice to nature as I see it, a simple joy at one level, and a complex tangle of stories and relationships at another. I think of it as a book about place-based conservation. Framing Nature (conservation and culture) is similar in style, but the way the narrative is built up is very different. Lockdown activities Throughout my second lockdown, I set myself a challenge to keep me distracted and to use my time to help conservation. This involved making and distributing 13 Little Owl nestboxes, as well as ten Tawny Owl nestboxes. I have achieved this by contacting local farmers across my area. Hopefully, this will be successful for next year, something to look forward to. During the process of creating these nestboxes, I felt it gave me focus, a positive feeling, hoping I might have made a difference. I went on making 22 feeders to donate to care homes, with hope of keeping the residents focused, to help with mental health in this difficult time! HAWFINCH The Hawfinch is a large, charismatic finch, celebrated by British birders every time it is encountered. It has a hulking bill famed for being able to crack open cherry stones, and is a bit of a shy scarcity within these shores. On the continent it is far easier to encounter. Indeed, it breeds across Europe and North Africa into temperate Asia, including Japan, where it is more migratory. Its nearest relatives are the New World’s Evening Grosbeak and Hooded Grosbeak. Interestingly, this species seems to have had a fairly recent history in the UK, with the first breeding records only recorded as recently as the early 19th Century. SOUTH WEST Highlights In association with The undoubted highlight for many was a first-winter Social Lapwing at Crows-an-Wra, Cornwall, the first in the UK since one on St Mary’s, Scilly in 2008. Also in Cornwall, a Coues’s Arctic Redpoll at Trevose Head was a county first (another at Portland, was a county second for Dorset). AVON CLEVEDON TO WESTON-SUPER-MARE: A few Brent Geese and Red-breasted Mergansers passed Sand Point and Clevedon-Yeo. Shelduck reached 400 each at several lower Severn sites. Once upon a time, when many of us were starting out as birdwatchers, certain birds were lumped together. Redpolls were just Redpolls, Rock Pipits and Water Pipits were considered one species, and even Pink-footed Goose and Bean Goose were considered separate subspecies of the same goose. Times have changed and ‘splitting’ has been in vogue for some time. So, Pink-footed Goose was considered separate from Bean Goose. But times have changed still more, and now we don’t talk about Bean Goose as one species, but consider Taiga Bean Goose and Tundra Bean Goose to be different species (and an instant ‘armchair tick’ for many, if you like that sort of thing). Blackcap It is thought that most Blackcaps wintering in the UK (of which there are about 3,000) are mainly continental breeders (from Germany etc) which cross over to enjoy our mild winter. Like other Sylvia warblers, Blackcaps can feed on fruit as well as invertebrates, and may even visit garden feeders. Males have black caps, females have red-brown caps (as do youngsters). Dartford Warbler Essentially heathland birds in the UK, so mainly found in the south-west, south, south-east and east of England in quite small numbers (just more than 3,000 breeding pairs), these are resident warblers, enjoying the warm microclimate of the gorse and heather of their chosen habitat. In real life, or at least, the closest I can guess as to what is real, these days, it is early December 2020 while I write. But, as this column is for the January 2021 issue, now seems a convenient time to sum up 2020, the strangest of birding years. As usual for the last two decades, I have done the vast majority of my birding around Peterborough, and haverecorded yet another Peterborough area year list. My total stands at what I consider a very respectable 187 bird species, a feat I matched in 2009, 2013, 2014 and only surpassed in 2008 (189), 2016 (188), 2018 (195), and 2019 (191). Shooting move RSPB Scotland has welcomed the Scottish Government’s announcement proposing the introduction of measures as soon as possible to license grouse shooting. Anne McCall, director of RSPB Scotland, said they welcomed efforts so far, but added: “21 years of piecemeal changes to wildlife protection laws so far have unfortunately not been enough to halt this practice. We believe that landowners and their employees who manage their shoots legally and sustainably have nothing to fear from the introduction of licensing.” Blue Tit numbers Blue Tits have been seen in fewer gardens and in smaller numbers since May 2020, according to the BTO. Well what a year 2020 turned out to be for the Hampshire 150 team. None of us ever expected the twists and turns of the Covid-19 pandemic that has swept the globe and restricted so many of us from travelling. Fortunate then that the team are based in various different parts of the county, enabling them to stand a chance of reaching their target while respecting the lockdown restrictions. However, the imposition of the secondnational lockdown over the course of November curtailed any real chance of adding to the total reported last month, which stood at 162. As Kieran points out in his feature, what we call a Great Northern Diver is known as a Common Loon in the USA. That’s because they really are ‘common’ there, even being found on the lake in New York’s Central Park at times. The word loon is thought to come from Anglo-Saxon and/or Old Norse words meaning lame, clumsy and awkward, although there’s also a chance that it derives from the word ‘lament’, because of the plaintive quality of the species’ call. Whatever the case, it’s rather more evocative than ‘diver’, which after all could apply to a lot of birds. It is: “Where are the Lapwings?” We’ve all seen mixed flocks of these twocharacters. These are a frequent, iflocalised, sight over much of lowlandBritain in the winter months. There is evena collective term for the two species, the‘Grassland Plovers,’ because they are sooften seen together. Woodlands and forests are much in the news these days, invariably in the context of Man’s impact on the environment. Occasionally the story is positive - tree planting by the Woodland Trust for example. But more often than not, the context is negative - the Amazon and Australia on fire, or HS2 and the wilful destruction of ancient woodland are all too familiar.
