Forget labels. It’s impossible to pigeonhole this interwar bungalow in Melbourne’s inner southeast. Therein lay its magic for interior designer and history buff Paul Hecker of Hecker Guthrie. It’s a little bit Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, Californian bungalow and even Neo-Gothic in its sublime detailing, which were all there from day one. “It was a bizarre collation, a mash-up, but I found it totally charming,” he says. All these wayward strands shared immaculate craftsmanship and quality materials, both amazing for a house that would not have been considered upmarket in its day. Little wonder Paul was keen to retain its fabulous quirks and eccentricities when the owners, with four children, asked him to renovate it in 2019. “I wanted to respect and lean into what was there,” he says.…

THE NATIONAL EME RGING ART P RIZE (NEAP) returned in November for its fourth and most expansive edition to date, presenting a spectacular collection of paintings and ceramics from more than 100 unrepresented, up-and-coming Australian artists. Von Leach Residence in an inner suburb of Geelong is a study in contrasts, each room weaving the strands of a story together, with plenty of plot twists along the way. “As you move through the home, the colour, light and proportions change continually, amplifying the charms and function of each space,” says interior designer Amelda Wilde, who reimagined the characterful bungalow with her partner, Matthew Leach of steel fabricator Von Steel. Amélie du Chalard’s home in Paris’s 9th arrondissement is testament to her transformation from banker to gallerist. A fortuitous architectural discovery of this light-filled volume, once a private library and later an artist’s studio, provided the shell for a kind of cosmic continuity towards its current incarnation as a harmonious home, blending life and art. According to Amélie, that is exactly as it should be: “I believe that art belongs in living spaces, not [somewhere] hidden away. WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT YOUR HOME? Blaize and I moved to Sydney from Newcastle at the end of 2019. We were renting in Newtown and Petersham and wanted to buy in a similar area. We found a newly completed development in Erskineville that had a couple of apartments left and this was the last one we saw. It overlooks a neighbouring building’s rooftop garden, which was a major selling point, and it’s very private and quiet. The large windows and open layout also appealed to us. Walking through the private front garden, up a stone path and steps to the entrance of this two-storey family home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, the initial impression feels a little old Hollywood: elegant white arches and curvy second-floor balconies framed by tall palm trees and edged with lush green lawn.
