Of all things, it was a garage that won the contract for this home in Melbourne’s Brighton. The owners tasked three separate design firms to design a space that would fit four cars on street level within the site. Sync Architecture was awarded the project based on their scheme that included a double-car garage, a flexible, Palm Springs-style open carport and extra room for driveway parking. In addition to its practicality, the format gave the facade breathing room as opposed to dominating it with cars. Replacing an old weatherboard dwelling one road back from the beach, the new build was set to be the owners’ “forever home”. In a suburb flush with cafes and bustling shops, nothing stays secret in Melbourne’s Prahran for long. Yet tucked in between a web of meandering backstreets is a grassy gem of a park with a towering Moreton Bay fig tree, playground and generous space for dogs to run free. While open to anyone, it’s mainly frequented by neighbours with a friendly, community atmosphere. Like many in his repertoire, Renato D’Ettorre’s most recent project is both simple and yet complex – and highly orchestrated. Situated on a cliff face, it’s not the typical coastal offering of a large house with picture windows at every opportunity. “You could say that I’m not really into building a series of straight walls, working like a robot in a more mechanical way. I much prefer working with angles and chamfered walls that create a sense of lightness and the opportunity to play with light and shade,” says Renato, who liaised with senior interior designer Belinda Brown and the team from his practice. When Ed and Edwina Glenn first came across South Melbourne’s tired Town Hall Hotel, it still had all the characteristics of a typical Aussie pub: sticky floors, a commercial kitchen, roof flagpoles and a bistro. While thriving in its heyday with rumours of The Rolling Stones stopping by for a drink and Elton John playing the piano, it had fallen into disrepair. Over the last decade, developers frequently – yet unsuccessfully – tried their hand, so it stood mostly empty, a ghost of its former self. However the slightly shabby, top-floor, three-bedroom apartment in a 70s building did not fit the bill. The owner knew it was ripe for renovation and approached Jeremy Bull, principal of Alexander &Co around six years ago to do a refit and add a roof terrace and master suite. The project was put on hold for a few years as council approval was sought for the additional level, then it picked up pace in 2021. WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT YOUR HOME? It was the double-height void and expansive glazing. It’s rare to find such scale, especially in a small apartment. The proportions make it feel more spacious, and you don’t get that confined feeling you get in spaces with standard-height ceilings. Located on a corner, the apartment also has original timber sash windows that allow light into the stair void, and views to the street below. Located within an old part of the building, the existing arched windows have been retained and opened up to allow light into the patio area. It’s not often an interior designer has a second chance to completely re-imagine a home. But that opportunity presented itself recently to Anna Trefely of Esoteriko when her clients bought a Sydney eastern suburbs house that she had worked on for the previous owners. Built in 2020 to a design by Matthew Woodward Architecture, the five-level concrete and steel house occupies a steep slope that had previously been partly inaccessible.
