Patience was the ultimate payoff for the owners of this home in Harkaway, a village midway between the city and country in the foothills of Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. Now pride of place for a couple with three children, the house was built by their former neighbours as they watched from down the street, wistfully envisaging a home just like it for themselves. Two late Victorian houses have been combined into an elegant family home for a couple with adult children. Fusing the best of the past with the present, there’s a magical journey through the spaces, accented with soft lighting that animates both owners’ collections of family portraits, furniture and objets d’art. Located on the prestigious St James Park Estate in Hawthorn, this grand Victorian home has been a number of years in the making. With parents becoming empty-nesters later in life, the long-term view for many architects involves designing self-sufficient spaces all under the same roof. To see the original photographs of Jono and Kate Cottee’s semi-detached Federation house in Sydney’s Randwick at the time of its purchase reveals the full imaginative scope and leap of faith their renovation required. “We were passionate about preserving the original character of the house rather than imposing a modern development,” says Jono. Of the rather lacklustre 1990s rear addition they were less enamoured and by demolishing and redesigning it a completely new aesthetic emerged.
