AS I DRIVE PAST the nearly completed Infinity apartment development by Koichi Takada Architects in Sydney’s Green Square, I notice how the scale and sweep of this aerodynamic structure in glass and metal sets it distinctly apart, redefining the skyline. THERE’S A THEORY that suggests creatives share a resemblance to their work, that an observer can identify the creator with one glance at what they have produced. With this in mind, there are unavoidable rock-star parallels that can be drawn between Dylan Farrell and the distinctly ‘Dylan’ objects and spaces that he designs. The son of an interior architect, Dylan was surrounded by creativity from a young age. He later identified with fine art, eventually gravitating towards industrial and interior design. “I always had both disciplines running concurrently,” says Dylan. He formalised an education in industrial design at the Pratt Institute in the US with a focus on both furniture design and “housing as a product”. WHEN AESOP OPENED ITS NEW STORE on Sydney’s Pitt Street in September, it looked to the rugged forms and hefty scale of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s artwork Wrapped Coast for inspiration. When candle maker Enoch William Beard arrived in Sydney in the late 1880s from Manchester with his pregnant wife Martha and their four children, he swiftly spotted an opportunity to provide for his growing family. Employed to meet the ships arriving from England and direct new arrivals to their homes, Enoch noticed that while they came with clothes, crockery and furniture, none brought bedding. “When Enoch came to Australia he saw that immigrants were arriving only with suitcases full of smaller items,” says his great-grandson Garry Beard. Architect Nick Tobias of Tobias Partners is very much in his comfort zone in the well-heeled, waterside suburb of Vaucluse. As we chat on the leafy street outside his recently completed Hopetoun House, he high fives the teenage son of a close friend and has a short cheerful exchange with the driver of a passing car.
