As a kid, my family was fortunate enough to have a beach shack located in Hat Head on the New South Wales mid-north coast. If you’re not familiar with this slice of heaven on earth, Hat Head is one of those charming sleepy towns where life goes slower than slow (it was a thing of outrage when concrete footpaths were installed in lieu of blackened sand trails, timeworn through grassy roadsides). And still to this day it’s an absolute dream to visit. As for our house, well, it was far from glam, let me tell you. But it was our fibro-clad patch of paradise where yearly visits were longed for with near-uncontrollable anticipation. Anything that stimulates the senses – fashion, art, architecture, design, gardens, books, music and the performing arts experienced both at home and abroad. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR APPROACH TO COLLECTING ART AND DESIGN? Foremost from the heart but also with curiosity and knowledge. My career has been principally in visual art, but I always seem to be drawn into the broader discourse about the relationship of how art is displayed and how it works in its environment and with other objects, especially functional art or collectible design, whether that be in my own home or a client’s, or working together with architects and designers. Tamsin Johnson transformed a traditional, seaside bungalow located at Bondi Beach, Sydney, into a sundrenched family retreat. Glowing vintage timber furniture, rattan blinds, tribal rugs and splashes of jaunty navy and white-striped fabrics augmented the deceptively simple whitewashed interiors. How did you become involved with this project and what was the client’s brief? The clients are a gorgeous, young, Melbourne-based family who bought this Bondi bungalow as a Sydney beach house. They wanted their kids to grow up spending their holidays on Sydney beaches and were drawn to the uniquely coastal and Australian character of this home. Melbourne architecture practice Jolson’s residential project, Arc Side, is nothing short of transformative. It took an assertive architect-designed house from the early 2000s by Cocks Carmichael, which was a contemporary response to neighbouring neo-Italianate terraces, and re-mastered it into a space tailored to the current lifestyle of the owners. Stepping through the gate from a busy main road in Melbourne into a walled front garden, a certain other-worldliness descends. This space feels like an art installation with the groundcover swamp oak (Casuarina glauca ‘Cousin It’) planted in clumping mounds and dense asparagus fern (Asparagus meyeri) set against bright white rendered walls. Suzanne Gorman of Studio Gorman joined forces with Josh Allen of 8 Squared Architects and Andy Bishop of Arthouse Constructions to update and extend this modernist home. What was the client’s brief? It was essential that the integrity of the original 1959 house, The Quarterdeck, designed by architect Glynn Nicholls (son of Walter Burley Griffin contemporary Eric Nicholls), was maintained but integrated with the latest technology. The home, which nestles into bushland in Sydney’s Sugarloaf Bay, was to double in size and pack all the features of luxury living – a movie room, wine cellar, cabana with kitchenette, space for a grand piano, upgraded pool and outdoor living – while remaining understated with a casual vibe. Working on the renovation of this Melbourne grande dame in South Yarra was oddly fortuitous for Kathryn Robson of architecture and interior design studio Robson Rak. “My best friend was also interested in the property so she was bidding against the couple who eventually became our clients. So it happened that within a few days we were signed up. It’s a small world,” she says. Sarah Davison Interiors created a warm, welcoming house that’s “elegant but not intimidating” for a young Sydney family. How did you become involved with this project and what was the client’s brief? Sarah Davison: Our brief was to sensitively re-plan, extend, design and furnish this historic Federation house for a family. The main goals were to let in more light and increase access to the beautiful garden and harbour view. What were the challenges of the site and how did you resolve them? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STUDIO? It’s vast with beautiful vintage character and gorgeous afternoon light. Rainbows refract from the louvres onto the flowers and a giant operating theatre light spotlights our creations. WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT THE SPACE? DID IT REQUIRE SIGNIFICANT ALTERATIONS? I found it on a swap/sell site while looking for extra space for our larger scale events. Buildings like this come along once in a lifetime so I did what I had to do to lock it down!
