Interior design studio Sally Caroline worked on the refresh of this home in a rural/beach location. How did you become involved with this project and what was the client’s brief? We had worked with this client before. Their intent was to refresh the current home as the first stage of a development on their expansive land on the Flinders coast. The brief was to create a cosy family retreat for this Melbourne and LA-based family. We also sought to spotlight it as a beach farm. Fearon Hay Architects had already prepared a design for this site in the Wakatipu Basin in New Zealand when the new owners came on the scene. How did you become involved with this project and what was the client’s brief? The owners of this home have utilised a design we had prepared for previous owners of the property. We reworked some spaces to suit their specific needs and then layered their interiors throughout. The initial brief required a sanctuary from which to take in the alpine landscape, one that could engage with views of mountain ranges on all sides while offering protection from the harsh extremes of the climate. Lindsey Adelman US lighting and furniture design has experienced a renaissance, and much of the impetus has come from Lindsey Adelman’s extraordinary lighting. Continually refining her craft, Adelman recently began exploring aging metals and found fellow New Yorker Rachel Cope of Calico Wallpaper was testing similar ideas. “Rachel and I showed separately at Design Miami recently,” says Adelman, “and discovered we were both working with salt and corroding surfaces, where the paper and, in my case, brass, were turning blue. This historic home revamped by Adelaide Bragg is one of the original properties in the Western District of Victoria and is part of a working sheep and cattle station. How did you become involved with this project and what was the client’s brief? We had previously worked on their Melbourne apartment and were delighted to decorate their family home. The interior had to be practical as it is a working property and they have family and grandchildren visiting often. It needed to be warm and welcoming and not precious. “Our approach was to have a monochromatic colourway for the sandstone rooms.” Simple moves by Smart Design Studio made a dramatic impact on this four-bedroom country home in New South Wales. What was the client’s brief? It was to create a connection between the two existing cottages on the site, so a new formal entrance was added. What were the challenges of the site and how did you resolve them? The existing structures were built in sandstone and it made sense that the additional pavilion, designed for indoor and outdoor entertaining, was also in sandstone. Simple luxurious finishes like limestone, Corian and brass offset the busy nature of the stone. Sisällä used an ‘avatar’ to design interiors for an unknown future family buying this newly built house, imagining them moving to Mt Martha for a sea change. What was the brief? We collaborated with builder Bruce Charlton of Mode Projects and building designer Sabrosa Designs on this property on a new subdivision. Bruce wanted the house to reflect the laid-back beach location and have a rustic feel with two ‘barns’: one in black timber for the kitchen/living area and another in recycled red brick for the main bedroom, ensuite and garage. A connecting structure holds the remaining spaces and the entry. We referenced the style of a Scandinavian barn in blackened wood and carried that idea inside. Perched on a clifftop 80 metres above the ocean, this eyrie could prove a challenge for a landscape designer with an aversion to heights. But Matt Cantwell of Secret Gardens found the project in Sydney’s eastern suburbs so irresistible he quickly put aside his misgivings. That dizzying drawback was also the site’s best asset – the view was jawdropping. “It is not often that you get to design a garden high above the ocean,” he says. “The sight stops you in your tracks.
