LANDSCAPE DESIGNER William Dangar (pictured with Belle interior design editor Lucy McCabe) says, “When specifying any outdoor furniture, pots or accessories I always like to follow the same principles. The most important element is scale. There is nothing worse than furniture that is undersized. I also like to use contrasting materials. For example, if I am working on stone surfaces I often prefer timber furniture. On a deck surface I would usually specify metal and stone products. “OVER THE YEARS I’D GOTTEN A LITTLE TIRED OF THE STYLE AND WANTED TO HAVE MORE VIVACITY AND COLOUR.” A couple of years ago, French interior designer Didier Gomez received a call out of the blue. It was concerning a storage unit he’d had in Normandy for some 20 years and had completely forgotten about. He couldn’t even recollect what was in it. It turned out to hold mainly a series of abstract geometric paintings he had acquired in his youth, but had never lived with. “I bought them simply because I liked them,” he says. “I couldn’t integrate them into the apartment I had at the time because there were so many windows and hardly any wall space.” When he finally unrolled them once more, he discovered works by…

This stretch of coast on Sydney’s northern beaches may look picture perfect, but it’s often blasted by winds and storms from the perversely named Pacific Ocean. And therein lay the challenge for landscape designer Anthony Wyer of Wyer & Co when he tackled this garden – he had to design it for the bad days, because the good days could take care of themselves. He had created a garden a few houses down the street a couple of years previously and, unbeknown to him, the owner of this property had applauded his handiwork. My Uber driver is coasting up and down Miami’s famous Collins Avenue on South Beach. He’s a local and we have the address but my hotel isn’t anywhere to be seen. On we drive, past the glam lobbies and hip hotspots with their porters, palm trees and Porsches. After a never-ending flight from Australia, it’s not exactly the cruising I’d choose to be doing (although I shouldn’t complain after flying across the Pacific on a business class bed on the new American Airlines Dreamliner). We pass the Traymore restaurant a number of times, but it isn’t until I look at eye level and see the small COMO Metropolitan sign, half obscured by foliage, that I realise the hotel has kept its historic 1930s signage, and that the Traymore is actually…

WHEN YOU ARE CONTACTED via Instagram to design a house in Norway’s Arctic Circle you understand the power of social media. “We jump at the challenge of designing something different from what we’re used to or designing in a different country,” says Melbourne-based architect Matt Gibson. From rural beginnings he moved to London after university in the late 90s where a role with prestigious interiors firm David Collins Studio pitched him into high-end fashion retail and hospitality design. “It was bespoke, highly refined work for Bond Street brands such as Armani and restaurants for Marco Pierre White. Dutch by birth, Willem Smit says he has forever had one foot dipped in the decorating pond. As a child he recalls being fascinated by the form of the Eames ‘DCW’ lounge chair. While the beginnings of his professional career path were in the theatre as commercial director of The Hague’s Royal Theatre, then as managing director of Stage performance space, he was always renovating, revitalising and rebranding with an identifiable ‘look’. “As a kid, I always wanted to be a decorator, but I couldn’t draw, which was a prerequisite for art and design school in Holland, so I turned to hotel management,” he says. As an architect Rob Mills is good at playing the long game. He sat on an empty block in the Victorian seaside town of Lorne from 2003 before building his remarkable Ocean House there in 2012. To convert this former cardboard factory on the edge of a park in Melbourne’s Armadale he has waited even longer. Bought more than 14 years ago, it is a pivotal building both in his life and his professional development. AN EXTRAORDINARY personal collection of 10,000 vintage scarves is testament to Benoît-Pierre Emery’s passion for pattern. As creative director of Objets et La Table at Hermès, he is the artistic powerhouse behind some of the brand’s most popular porcelain. In his recent Tie Set collection, he experimented with his love of graphic details. Benoît-Pierre immersed himself in art early on but after stints at the Paris École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and London’s Royal College of Art he became drawn to fashion and graphic art. “Studying in London was free, experimental and creative. Located in Melbourne’s Toorak, this vast home was built in the early-20th century, and its elegant rebirth is sharp and contemporary without forsaking its heritage roots. The owners were repeat clients for SJB director of interior design, Ljiljana Gazevic, who had renovated their previous home with the same black and white brief. ARTICULATED INSIDE AND OUT, THE CONCRETE IS PART OF A FEAST OF DEFTLY CHOSEN FINISHES DELIVERING WARMTH AND TACTILITY. Tucked behind trees abutting a beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, this home is tantalisingly low-key on the outside, but walk into the double-height entry and, like the Tardis, it opens up miraculously before you. Luminous and light-filled, it inhales its airy location, with inside and out becoming one. Intriguingly, it was designed “from the inside out”, says architect Bruce Stafford. Christopher Kenyon’s beachfront studio might be pumping out Prince’s Little Red Corvette but the canvases surrounding him reflect every blue of a Derwent pencil set – ultramarine, teal, turquoise, aqua, indigo. His is the dream commission: creating, in situ, paintings for a newly minted luxury resort on Fiji’s Kokomo Private Island, which will hang alongside limited-edition John Olsens and installations of driftwood and beachcomber bric-a-brac by Akosita Waqairawai.
