n early 80s house in Portsea was in need of a freshen up and David Hicks was just the designer for the job. How did you become involved with this project and what was the brief? We had previously designed a house and undertaken decorative work for the client in Melbourne and developed a great working relationship. The client wanted to refurbish and extend their existing house in Portsea. What were the challenges of the site? As the house is located on the edge of a cliff, hovering above the ocean at the end of a large, long and narrow block we had to be careful about changing the footprint. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STUDIO? A whimsical, classic oasis with a contemporary edge. I wallpapered the space in Brunschwig & Fils ‘Bird and Thistle’ – it provides a peaceful garden to work from. I used the same textile to design a banquette and framed it with European sconces. A floor-to-ceiling mirrored wall creates an interesting play on space and pattern. At this point it looked very pretty, peaceful and downright predictable – I felt I needed to set the cat among the pigeons! I asked my friend, artist Robert Doble to create a large artwork to breathe life and energy into the space. Wanting a house full of texture and richness led the clients to Decus for the interior design of their new build at Killcare on the NSW Central Coast. How did you become involved with this project and what was the brief? The clients were referred by a family member who works in design. The project, designed by Dan Clift from Square Design, was in the early stages of construction. The clients wanted to include references to beautiful European farmhouses and chateaux which they had visited during their travels. What were the challenges of the site? These clients had a small farm on the Bellarine Peninsula and engaged Coy Yiontis Architects to design a townhouse for themselves and their children who were at school in Melbourne. How did you become involved with this project and what was the brief? The clients came to us after seeing some of our published work. They had bought the site years earlier as an investment, and wanted an easy-to-maintain home, nothing lavish or oversized, that capitalised on the views. What were the challenges of the site? With about a third of Will Dangar’s work concentrated on the edge of Sydney Harbour, it’s natural for him to think he’s seen every perfect view. Occasionally, though, he is taken by surprise, as in the case of a new house at Kirribilli. “It’s facing south, down a tight cul-de-sac, so nothing had quite prepared me for this unreal view out to Bradley’s Head, Taronga Zoo and the eastern suburbs beyond.” But a view can be a double-edged sword, he says, with careful management needed when it comes to the placement and maintenance of trees. W hen designer Greg Natale first saw US architect Paul Rudolph’s Milam house in 2005, it “blew him away” with its cubed, sculptural lines and minimalist celebration of concrete, stone and glass. He stored this in the back of his mind until he found a time and place to draw inspiration from it. Years later, this three-storey home overlooking a bush-clad gully in Sydney’s inner west offered him the perfect opportunity. Taking his cues from that 1961 Florida classic, Greg has imbued it with his own distinctive design flourishes, though they’re more muted than expected.
