“WE ARE VERY INTERESTED in exploring how buildings age, how they make you feel and how we can intensify the engagement of memory,” says Patrick Kennedy of Melbourne architecture practice Kennedy Nolan. And this notion of creating a memorable experience is echoed by his business partner of 16 years, Rachel Nolan. “It is often about contrasts,” she says. “For example, if you move through a very low, dark space into a high and bright one you tend to remember it.” Ditto the journey through a house where everything isn’t revealed at once but rather unfurls in layers as shifting perspectives deliver the unexpected. “Our solution is never a box grafted onto an existing building,” says Nolan. Czech glass is making a major comeback as the country’s best producers mix their ancient artisanal skills with exciting concepts by contemporary designers. Lucie Koldová has become an international name designing for brands such as Per/Use and La Chance. After establishing herself in Paris for four years working on projects with Arik Levy and forming a design partnership with Dan Yeffet in her mid 20s, Koldová now works out of her Prague studio. She has recently been appointed creative director of Brokis, one of Czech Republic’s most interesting lighting brands. When Patsy and Michael Peacock called on architect Alexander Michael for advice on a property they had just bought, his first thought was to bulldoze the two structures, with their only redeeming feature being a spectacular location on the escarpment above Robertson, NSW, with fantastic views to the Illawarra coastline. Before Melbourne’s beloved Stokehouse in St Kilda was ravaged by fire in 2014, the view from the first-floor restaurant was out towards tree trunks. Now, rising sea levels mean diners are looking at palm fronds. Sited on Crown Reserve, the iconic beach pavilion has had many incarnations since its origins in the 1900s as a single-storey tea house, and there were strict new regulations to consider during its re-build. Proprietor Frank van Haandel describes the complexity of the construction as “11 out of 10” with environmental concerns and topographical difficulties front and centre. THERE IS SOMETHING heart-warming about seeing people from your own country battling it out with the best in the world. In Australia it’s usually to do with sport but the same reaction occurs with architecture practices at the Venice Biennale or any leading art or design fair. It’s an expensive exercise for Australian designers to participate in Salone del Mobile or one of Milan Design Week’s Fuorisalone events but Milan has always been the design destination to strive for – a place where a designer’s work can be seen by the world’s most influential manufacturers and buyers. French naturalist painter Claire Basler is renowned for her sensuous paintings of flowers, stems and trees. In the Château de Beauvoir, her home of 40 rooms on five hectares in the Auvergne, she has found her true dimension with the vast canvases she craved. With partner Pierre, Claire has restored and decorated other homes in the past 10 years, including a former smithy in Paris and an old country school, but restoring this rundown château has been their main challenge. The pair love their ‘two-getherness’ in the immense space but enjoy seeing the place filled with visitors (such as two weekends in May and June when about 500 people visit) “adding life to our life”, as she says. “When we bought the château we did not know that my paintings…

On the cover of the 2014 monograph devoted to the work of French interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot is a sitting room in Paris. The flat in question belongs to Eloise Goldstein and her property investor husband Peter, whom Jean-Louis initially met a decade ago. “Eloise is really great and extremely upbeat,” he says. “The first things she said to me were that she didn’t like recessed lighting and that she adored Gio Ponti. I immediately knew we could work together.” The feeling was mutual. “I remember Jean-Louis sweeping in and winning me over,” recalls Eloise. “All the suggestions he made were just fabulous. The chic entry to the Hermès reveal of its new collections for the home in Milan was typically understated – a simple line of giant olive bonsai trees in unadorned terracotta pots and minimal signage. Inside, deputy artistic director Charlotte Macaux Perelman had designed an elegant Mediterranean terracotta and white pavilion with lime-washed walls and handmade Umbrian bricks – a homage to Argentinian horse stables – which would reveal the eclectic new pieces. C onceived as a permanent home for a young couple with a family in mind, this Mornington Peninsula coastal property is the result of a collaboration between architect Jay Earles of Planned Living Architects, interior architect Alicia Freeman of Studio Tom and landscape architect Brett Robinson of Acre Studio. What were the challenges of the site? Jay Earles: Bushfire overlays required the removal of much of the vegetation, resulting in a very exposed site.
