Leslie and Keith Blodgett’s New York pied-à-terre occupies the top three floors of a 2007 building in the heart of SoHo. Ask them why they chose the location and Keith has a quick-fire response. “Because Chanel is down the block,” he quips, looking teasingly at his wife. Nicole Vatselias is not one to shy away from challenges. Instead, she embraces them and has developed a career – indeed, a life – out of creating bold and beautiful statements. Certainly, it applies to her decorating style, which she executes with aplomb. The interior stylist’s way with grand gestures is writ large in the Vaucluse home she shares with her partner, dancer Shannon Hsu, and Nicole’s children from her first marriage, Luella and Murphy. Their names were fused to create the title for LuMu Interiors, the shop that Nicole owns and runs in nearby Double Bay. Renovating an established but jaded garden is something I find as satisfying as creating a new garden from scratch. It’s a chance for renewal, rejuvenation and transformation, and this project in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has been one of the most enjoyable by far. When the bones and structure of a property are as impeccable as these then the results are even better. The owners engaged architect Stephen Buzacott in 2003 with a view to renovating and enhancing their existing home. The brief was to transform the modest home, creating contemporary spaces to enable their love of entertaining and in which to raise their young family. Sleep EL FENN What an explosion of colour that works! This is not a traditional riad, although many old trades and techniques have been applied to create it: waxed stucco walls, tiled and marbled floors, internal gardens and fountains, all mixed in with a good dose of humour. Down a tiny side street off the medina, the entrance is discreetly marked by two pot plants and a giant brass door knocker. Inside are rows of traditional Moroccan slippers – and one pair of pink Converse high tops! At first the layout is somewhat disorienting but you quickly become accustomed to the intimate internal courtyards, roof terrace and resident turtles. SOMETIMES THE SKILL of an architect is evidenced in the extracting of beauty where the circumstances seem stacked against it. One such project is the Rail House by Clare Cousins Architects in which the awkwardness of the site, the clients’ concerns around noise and security, not to mention heritage issues, threw down the collective gauntlet. “It is a polarising project,” says Cousins of this exquisitely austere building. “The clients favoured a raw, stripped-back Japanese aesthetic and so we used black-stained cedar and concrete. The council described the building as ‘mute’ which was a compliment, in that it didn’t compete with its surroundings,” she adds. From the intricately carved Italian-inspired front doors to a Moorish-style dressing room upstairs, and living spaces evoking French baroque and Swedish neoclassicism, this Sydney house is an enchanted journey through seemingly disparate styles and eras. Yet they all combine beguilingly in their own European union. The Italianate five-bedroom mansion with harbour views wooed the owners in 2014. “The privacy and serenity of the property captivated us. When a couple based in Sydney’s Elizabeth Bay were looking to extend this Palm Beach bungalow into a weekend retreat for entertaining family and friends, they enlisted Nina Maya Interiors for the transformation. With a background in fashion, Nina seemed the perfect fit for the project, which required both sensitivity and flair. The original residence was built in the 1960s, with a renovation by a previous owner in the 1980s. “When our clients bought the property it was a rabbit warren of rooms and ill-used space, with low ceilings and dated finishes,” says Nina. Functionally, the three-bedroom bungalow was to turn into a sixbedroom, six-bathroom home with multiple living and entertaining areas for multi-generational use, including a cinema room, new deck and garden terraces. It’s not every day the focus of a home renovation becomes the garage facade, but for this Melbourne house its redesign was integral to the property’s new life. An original 1900s Victorian in Albert Park, the home’s rear living and kitchen area had sliding glass doors looking onto a depressing courtyard and dreary, double-storey garage rendered in unattractive acrylic. “Because of the huge plate glass windows we had to improve the outlook,” says architect and interior designer Anne Hindley. “The occupants of the main house look onto this so we could not afford for it to be an eyesore. THE ALESSI DESIGN AWARDS 2017 attracted more than 70 entries from Australia’s up and coming industrial designers who were given the brief to conceive an original design that would complement the pieces in the Alessi stable – creations that would fit the objets bijoux genre. Behind the neat heritage facade on a tree-lined street in Melbourne is this refined, contemporary abode furnished with a bold rainbow of sculptural pieces. Its size, too, is unexpected. “The house has a beautiful frontage but you don’t really understand the scale and how big it is until you go inside,” says interior designer Adele Bates.
