LAST OCTOBER, William (Bill) Wright, AM – distinguished curator, artist, educator and adored teacher – passed away in Sydney at 77.
“Warm”, “generous”, “all-embracing”, “irreplaceable” are among words used to describe Bill by those who knew him. He could engage with anyone on any level and subject – art, music, literature, all the sensibilities. “While not big physically, he was a colossus as an intellect and mentor,” according to artist John Beard.
Bill said his education started with his enrolment at the National Art School, at age 16, and it never ended. In 1958, he went abroad and was away 23 years, painting, exhibiting and teaching.
