An enthusiastic crowd of interior design lovers converged on Warwick’s Glebe showroom in inner Sydney to enjoy a nostalgic look back at the trends of the last four decades as part of Belle magazine’s 40th year of publication. Guests were enthralled as Belle editor Tanya Buchanan and style director Steve Cordony took guests through a fascinating presentation looking back over the decades through the pages of the magazine. A great talking point was the four distinctive tableaus styled by Steve, each one relating to the interior decorating trends of the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s and given a contemporary spin incorporating four classic chairs. Residents in Melbourne’s Albert Park happily stick by the rules. For the past 15 years, the period neighbourhood has been under the watchful eye of a strict council scheme that seeks to protect and conserve heritage overlays. As a result, rows of Victorian terraces, semi-detached townhouses and classical cottages exude storybook appeal while also adding a little mystery to the area. What lies behind these enigmatic and majestic houses, with their tiled verandahs and steel railings, is anyone’s guess. A stone’s throw from the Duomo cathedral in the heart of Milan, the ancient paved streets begin to narrow. Here, behind a sober 16th-century facade, lies an apartment in which frescoed ceilings float nearly four metres overhead. That the owner has a talent for interiors is quickly revealed on entry to this family home on the first floor, set around a leafy courtyard. Canyon Point, Southern Utah, US, is the setting for something truly spectacular – not just the stunning mesas that rise up majestically out of the desert, but something man-made – the Amangiri Resort. It is no wonder this rocky desert landscape with its contrasting emptiness and soaring elevations inspired such a project. The work of a team of three architects – Marwan Al-Sayed, Wendell Burnette, and Rick Joy operating as I-Studio 10 – it was conceived in 2007, when the trio pooled their vision and their knowledge of the territory (their practices are located in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona, respectively). SCENTS OF PLACE It’s not often that a fragrance is directly ‘built’ from the physical experience of a particular room but that’s exactly what Arquiste founder Carlos Huber (left) has done with his newest scent, The Architects Club. Mexico-born and New York-based, Huber originally trained as an architect, specialising in historical preservation, before creating his awarded perfume line. “WE DO END-TO-END DESIGN,” says Christopher Glanville, one half of emerging Sydney design firm C+M Studio with Megan Burns. “Everything from architecture to interiors to furniture to artwork. When the owners of this turn-of-last-century villa asked Jeff Fearon and Tim Hay of Fearon Hay Architects to design them a home befitting its postcard location on Auckland Harbour, the duo saw double – in some surprising and beguiling ways. This austerely handsome home looks as if it could act as a location for a darkly romantic film noir. A grand mansion with good bones, its commanding presence hints at a fascinating past. This Georgian Colonial-style residence, first known as Grace Park House, was built in 1856 for landowner Michael Lynch and presided over 36 hectares of what became the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. In the 1870s it became a girls’ school, when a two-storey addition of classrooms was erected at the building’s rear.
