He graduated from the same university, based in Hefei, Anhui Province, with a Master of Science degree in 1992. After graduation, he joined the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, the first modern astronomical research institution established in China.
