When the Detroit Tigers selected Seattle University lefthander Tarik Skubal in the ninth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, not even the most optimistic scout or front office type could have predicted the 255th player taken in the draft would win a Cy Young Award and contend for a second the next year. But here we are. Skubal captured the pitching triple crown in 2024, earning the American League Cy Young unanimously while leading the Tigers into an unlikely postseason run. Greatness on the diamond is hard to achieve, even if some of our Major League Baseball idols make it look easy. As the game has evolved over time to include pitching rotations from one and two, to four and five-man staffs, the rise of the closer and the advent of specialty relivers, the opportunities for starters to rack up strikeouts in massive amounts over a single season are seemingly a thing of the past.
