Our physical environments are known to make an impact on our health and wellbeing. A combination of scientific research, architectural principles and artistic imagination can result in a space that plays a significant role in critical brain functions, including learning, perception, orientation, mood, focus and efficiency. As someone who is passionate about both my work as a designer and my interest in health and wellbeing, I aim to create a fusion of the best of both worlds when designing a space. Many of my recent designs, as pictured, aim to create a holistic environment in which the homeowners can relax and rejuvenate. We love the floor-to-ceiling feature wall. “One of the main benefits of a new build is the luxury of having a clean slate. The homeowners made the most of this advantageous situation and spent time designing the ensuite bathroom of their dreams. They requested a space that is timeless yet unique, a luxurious, elegant haven in which they can relax and unwind after a long day. They wanted the bathroom to exude a luxe hotel vibe and requested a double walk-in shower to suit their intended ambience. We love the Parisi freestanding bathtub, which adds a striking feature to the large space. “With encompassing views of the property, this stunning ensuite creates synergy with the bedroom so that the spaces have a harmonious relationship. The large freestanding Parisi bath takes full advantage of the spectacular views and is highlighted by pin lights, which accentuate the shape of the tub on the raised platform. We love the tiled feature wall. “This home’s previous bathroom was outdated and did not function well. The original colour palette consisted predominantly of teal and the layout was such that storage space was very limited. We purchased the property knowing the bathroom was the first room we would renovate and decided to demolish the existing bathroom in order to start with a clean slate. Functionality and storage were important for us as when you live in an apartment, space is limited. We chose not to replace the bathtub to maximise space and allow for a larger shower and vanity. We love the bathroom’s elegant matt black tapware. “Though the home’s bathroom had been renovated by the previous owners, it had not been done to the best standards. The current homeowners needed to rip up tiles and a wall in order to fix a leak caused by the shower and decided to commit to a new renovation as well. Though practicality was a high priority, the homeowners were also set on adding a touch of luxury to the space. So matt black tapware was chosen and a matt finish was selected for the new vanity. “The homeowners knew exactly what they wanted out of their renovation. The previous bathroom, powder room and laundry all had poor ventilation, poor lighting and were stylistically quite outdated. The storage was minimal, the tin shower was leaky, and the homeowners wanted these vices replaced with beauty and functionality pronto. We love the textured look of the solid timber vanity. “The previous bathroom was very old and dated. Irregular shaped walls, a low ceiling and the exposed hot water system made the room appear cramped. The homeowners wanted a bathroom that utilised the space to its potential and let in more natural light. They also wanted an in-wall toilet cistern, a larger shower, a relocated hot water system and a new design that accounted for the age of the house while also providing a contemporary feel. To achieve this brief, we included skylights in the design to improve lighting and open up the space. We love the elegant back-to-wall freestanding bath. “This bathroom was designed predominantly with the use of space in mind. The previous design did not utilise the space effectively, so this renovation led to an overhaul of elements that did not do the bathroom any favours. The homeowners wished for this bathroom to reflect the style of the 1950s home, but with a modern twist. A Par Taps Bell lever basin set in black was installed to suit the home’s ‘50s aesthetic and a white vanity with bevelled edge was chosen to complement the tapware. As the bathroom is relatively small, tiling was completed in a way that created the illusion of a much larger space. We love the luxurious walk-in shower. “Originally just a spare room, this space was transformed into an ensuite bathroom full of little luxuries. The homeowners were very particular about not wanting a vanity; instead preferring a clean, uncluttered aesthetic for their ensuite. A wall sink was thus chosen for the space, with a shaving mirror placed above it. This meant there was enough space for a large walk-in shower, which was on the homeowner’s wish list, with heated towel rails installed to accompany the luxurious addition. The space’s original door was retained but extended, with a trimless door jamb utilised to match the ensuite’s minimalist aesthetic. We love the dramatic use of marble for the benchtop to give an added sense of luxury. “There’s nothing like the thrill of being given a clean slate on which to design and build a bathroom, which is exactly the opportunity that was afforded with this new residence. The only challenge was that of size in the space allocated for the bathroom. To tackle the long, narrow space, I chose to have a freestanding bathtub installed and mounted on a wooden plinth. This style of bath was designed specifically for small spaces and, elevated on the contrasting plinth, gives the impression of being much larger, in effect widening the room. The bank of mirrors over the twin basins also helps to increase this illusion, as does installing an in-wall cistern.…

To prevent moisture build-up, bathrooms need a fan with the capacity to change the air volume of the room at least 15 to 20 times per hour. To ensure the fan is working correctly, there needs to be air flow coming into the bathroom via an open window or from under a door (FIG.1). Energy ratings under the Australian Building Code may require doorways to the bathroom to be sealed and this, combined with a sealed window, may reduce the effectiveness of any installed exhaust fan, regardless of the brand.
