This town on the shores of Lake Oahe is set to transform into one of America’s bass cities when the 2022 Bassmaster Elite Series visits this year. Oahe was a surprise hit of the 2018 Elite Series season, and a top-level return to South Dakota is a late-season highlight on this year’s trail. The town takes its name from an early 20th-century railroad junction with a bridge over the Missouri River in the ancestral lands of the Lakota Sioux. That bridge was demolished in the early 1960s with the creation of Oahe Dam, which stands not far from a monument marking the reported resting place of the remains of chief Sitting Bull. The revered Lakota Sioux leader is said to have been born nearby.…

IT’S HARD TO believe that 2011 was over a decade ago. I understand the concept of addition, but when that particular math skill is used in concert with time, especially the older I get, it simply doesn’t add up. This realization slapped me in the face recently when I spent a day on the boat in Florida with Elite Series pro Shane LeHew. We were fun fishing with an umbrella rig. AFTCO representatives say the company donated $548,000 to fishing conservation in 2021, including some $20,000 to B.A.S.S. Nation club conservation projects like habitation restoration and habitat creation via the AFTCO X B.A.S.S. conservation grants. Those projects included cypress tree plantings, artificial habitat placement and combating shoreline erosion. Each year, AFTCO pledges at least 10% of company profits to go toward fishing conservation and resource protection to ensure future generations have access to sustainable fisheries. Alongside donations, AFTCO has implemented a Fisheries First sustainability pledge that is decreasing the company’s impact on rivers, lakes and oceans. AFTCO says that 30% of new sportswear offerings in 2022 will be constructed from recycled and sustainable fabrics and they will be transitioning all hangtags to recycled paper products.…

For the past 25 years, anglers have relied on Bassmaster Magazine to bring them monthly AstroTables, which identify the best days and the best times to fish based on the solar/lunar periods. Some anglers disregard the information; many other anglers religiously fish by the times recommended. Whether you believe or not, when it comes to giant bass, research indicates that it is wise to pay attention to the peak periods and phases. Doug Hannon, the “Bass Professor,” personally caught 800 bass over 10 pounds and found strong correlations around new and full moon periods. IT’S NOT THAT anyone was necessarily surprised at Caleb Kuphall’s Elite Series victory, but doing so on Lake Guntersville — a fishery that pundits thought would surely fall to a seasoned Alabama grass surgeon like Matt Herren or Gerald Swindle — actually did surprise some folks. Not according to some Bassmaster Elite Series pros, who note that subtle design characteristics will impact how the bait performs. “I have different baits for pre- and postspawners,” says pro Matt Robertson. “A lot depends upon the water temperature, mood of the fish and how I need to work it.” The boot or paddle at the tail end of the lure is a key trait of any swimbait, and those boots come in a variety of sizes and shapes. TEXAS PRO KEITH Combs has always been one of the easiest anglers to talk to and work with on the Bassmaster Elite Series. But on certain subjects, he and I just can’t communicate. It’s like we speak two different languages. Take, for example, the subject of the elusive 10-pound trophy largemouth bass.
