I GO TO a lot of sporting events. My daughter attends the University of Alabama (Roll Tide), so the football games are a great time to catch up. In my hometown of Birmingham, Ala., there is a minor-league baseball team (the Barons), a minor-league hockey team (the Bulls) and my stepdaughter plays lacrosse on her high school squad. Members of the West Virginia B.A.S.S. Nation partnered with the Boy Scouts of America and the Army Corps of Engineers to place more than 250 used Christmas trees into a local lake. Each winter, the trees are dropped off at an Army Corps office near Tygart Lake, a 391-acre reservoir near the city of Grafton. According to West Virginia B.A.S.S. Nation Conservation Director Jerod Harman, the trees were installed near a new marina launch site that was recently redeveloped with the help of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. In Washington, U.S. Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) secured $3.5 million to fight pests on the Louisiana coast. The money, which comes from the 2019 agricultural appropriations bill, will be used to eradicate insects destroying Roseau cane, a wetland reed that covers a large portion of the state’s coastal ecosystem. “Roseau cane is vital to maintaining the integrity of our vibrant coastline, and we need to do everything we can to protect it. This funding will help quash the pests that are greedily gnawing away and destroying the Roseau cane reeds,” Kennedy said. Bass Fishing Bucket List The person I wish I could go back and fish with was an old boy, and I didn’t know his name or anything about him. About 20 years ago, my family would go to Sun Lakes, Wash., for a weekend in August. I, of course, would bring poles. Early one Saturday morning, I went to the dock at first light.
