This month marks the 15th anniversary of a fish we all love to hate.
Big Mouth Billy Bass, the ubiquitous singing plastic fish, debuted 15 years ago this month, flying off retailers’ shelves and quickly driving people insane with its renditions of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River” and Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”
Billy was the brainchild of Joe Pellettieri, vice president of product development at Gemmy Industries, an Irving, Texas-based animated toy company. Actually, Pellettieri’s wife, Barbara, had a flash of inspiration as she and her husband drove past the Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine, Texas. After several failed attempts, Joe Pellettieri and developers at Gemmy came up with the right combination of internal motors and motion sensors and took Billy to the marketplace.
Fast forward…
