Bass fishermen tend to overlook 21,000-acre Smith Lake, situated a mile north of Birmingham just off I-65. Smith Lake has a strong population of spotted bass, but they don’t grow as big as the largemouth bass in Lake Guntersville and Lake Wilson to the north.
The deep, clear, rocky bass habitat at Smith Lake also intimidates anglers who are accustomed to the stained, fertile water found in many other Alabama reservoirs. When fishermen see the bottom in 15 feet at Smith, their confidence plunges.
