A B.A.S.S. college angler is on the water again thanks to Pure Fishing. Before the beginning of this year’s tournament season, Southeast Missouri State University angler Tyler Smith saw his tackle, his partner’s boat and his college laptop go up in smoke during a car fire. Smith’s fishing partner, Jake Harris, lost a $25,000 boat, and the young angler himself took a loss of an estimated $10,000 in fishing gear. The duo qualified for the 2017 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship in 2017 using Harris’ boat. Make a 360-degree light to fish after dark safely and, in many states, legally. My young fishing buddy, Mitch Sanders, showed me one that he and his dad, Todd, made for just a few dollars. Mitch had a slimmer conduit pipe from another home project that the LED bulb fit into; I made one with a 5-foot section of 1 1/4-inch black plastic plumbing pipe. The larger-diameter pipe fit perfectly into a tackle crate rod holder — no rattling around. I plan to add some reflective tape and a flag. The key component is a Diamond Visions COB (Chip On Board) LED light, which I found at a local big-box home-improvement store for $3. MILLIONS OF FISHING fans know Bill Dance as the host of The Bill Dance Outdoors TV show, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Others remember him as one of the fiercest competitors in professional B.A.S.S. fishing. Dance won eight of the first 20 professional tournaments he entered and was Angler of the Year three out of the first eight seasons he competed. But he never won the “big one” — the Bassmaster Classic. He did come close, though, in 1973. And the story of how Dance lost the 1973 Classic is one of the most poignant in bass fishing. After missing a Top 10 finish in the 2017 season, you started off 2018 with two Top 10 finishes at Lake Travis and Kentucky Lake. What do you credit for your resurgence? Simplifying and going back to the basics. As you progress in your career, you have a lot of history with a lake, and it’s tempting to fish in the past. This year, I decided to make an effort not to do that. At La Crosse, I’d always fished Pools 8 and 9, so this year I decided to only fish Pool 8. I did that again at Grand, as well.
