The cover of this issue of Bassmaster commemorates the great magazine covers of the ‘80s. Bass were the superstars of this decade, and the magazine focused on them for the majority of issues. Between 1980 and 1989, fish graced 46 covers, well more than half of the magazines printed that decade. Of these basscentric images, 18 were illustrations. One of our favorites was the January 1980 artwork by Doug Schermer. We located the original slide in the Bassmaster vaults and decided to reprint the illustration for this month’s cover to celebrate the milestones achieved during these 10 years in not only the magazine, but also the bass fishing industry. As far as cover models go, it’s tough to beat the real star of our sport.…

Double-Jointed David Kochis, email  $300 This was the first double-jointed bait that was ever made. It was created in the 1920s by Oliver and Grabb. In this condition, it would be worth around $300. I HATE SCIENCE. Well, maybe I don’t hate it; it’s just I’m not smart enough to understand it. SPOTTED BASS. You either love them or hate them. They’re hard fighters, much like smallmouth. They’re a blast to hook and play, even the smaller variety. But man, can they be quirky. While they may look like largemouth, and you may catch them around largemouth haunts, they’re marauders, making them difficult to pattern from one day to the next. One of saltwater fishing’s most popular brands, AFTCO, is making its freshwater debut this year. Product news aside, this is significant because AFTCO donates 10 percent of its annual profits to conservation initiatives. Company officials say, last year, that figure amounted to over $500,000. President Bill Shedd received a lifetime achievement award from the American Sportfishing Association for his work in the conservation field. Now, bass fisheries will be getting a piece of the pie. Big names like Jason Christie, Todd Faircloth and Dustin Connell have already signed up to promote AFTCO products, which means Elite Series fans will be seeing a lot of the California saltwater specialists this season.…

When experimenting with different props and pitches, how much will it affect speed? Ported vs. nonported props?@Bgood419, Instagram Luke Dunkin of T-H Marine says the lower the pitch number, the better the hole shot, but top-end speed can suffer. Conversely, if you increase the pitch, you may get better top-end speed but a slower hole shot. “It depends on other factors, and it varies from boat to boat,” Dunkin adds. “It really comes down to trial and error.” Ported holes are vents that can be plugged or unplugged and control the rate at which the rpm rises. IF YOU COULD win $250,000 in eight days of back-to-back tournament competition using the same lure and same retrieve in both places — which happen to be 3,000 miles apart, by the way — would you hesitate? Of course not. Neither did Brett Hite. The year was 2008, and Hite was competing in an FLW Tour event on Lake Tohopekaliga, which he won with one of the greatest victory margins in FLW Tour history. The celebration had to wait, however, because Hite had another FLW National Guard tournament to fish on the California Delta. ESPECIALLY IN ITS INFANCY, every sport needs at least one charismatic, larger-than-life superstar — someone whose personality cult grows with every victory. Think Dale Earnhardt in stock car racing, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer in golf, Hulk Hogan in professional wrestling ... you get the idea. Bass fishing had its superstar almost from the very first tournament, Ray Scott’s All-American Bass Tournament at Beaver Lake, Arkansas, in 1967. Bill Dance placed second in that one and then won three out of the next five B.A.S.S. tournaments held. Dance was dominant those first three years, and his string of successes proved there was a lot more than luck involved in winning a bass tournament.
