MIAMI The Marlins’ top two pitching prospects in 2014—lefthander Andrew Heaney and righty Anthony DeSclafani—bombed once they reached Miami.
Righthander Jose Urena hopes to avoid that fate, and his June 1 performance against the Cubs, in which he allowed four hits, three walks and three runs in six innings, was the first promising sign in that regard.
Heaney, a first-round pick in 2012, went 0-3, 5.83 in his trial run in the majors last year, while DeSclafani went 2-2, 6.27. The Marlins included both in offseason trades for Dee Gordon, Dan Haren and Mat Latos.
Now comes Urena, who parlayed a successful run at Triple-A New Orleans this season— he allowed seven runs in six starts—to a big league callup. However, the 23-year-old has struggled in four appearances, including two…
