After it was all over, after the 12th inning ended, after the 1,000 fans at Pioneer Park in Marietta, Ohio, had rejoiced, the father and the son shared a cathartic hug.
It was June 1, 1981—the day Marietta head coach Don Schaly won his first Division III national championship and the day his son John was named tournament MVP. “That was probably the sweetest moment,” John said. “Ever.”
Seven years later, the father and son shared a field again— this time, as opposing coaches. The mother, Sue, sat directly behind home plate, half of her long-sleeve T-shirt supporting her husband’s team and the other half supporting her son’s team, Berry (Ga.). Marietta won, 25-3. “He kicked our butt,” John said, laughing. “They crushed us.”
