If the Philippines had issued all the coin and bank note denominations that have been likely purposely posted to social media the island nation’s currency system would be quite confusing. In fact, there is a lot of fake news regarding coins and bank notes of the Philippines in cyberspace. There are counterfeit bank notes and coins as well. Anyone caught counterfeiting Philippine currency will receive a sentence of a minimum of 12 years and one day, accompanied by a maximum fine of 2 million pesos. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas or Philippine Central Bank would like to add severe penalties to this for hoarding much needed coins, but at the time this article was being written such a law was only in its proposal stage. The Aldrich-Vreeland Emergency Currency Act in force between 1908 and 1915 led to the issuance of the date back national bank notes in both the Series of 1882 and 1902. However, when the act expired, the date back nationals continued to be printed. Existing and newly printed stocks of the date backs continued to be sent to the banks until they were exhausted. The most interesting and probably most convoluted of the post-act printings involved the lightly used Series of 1882 10-10-10-10 plates. We’ll take a look at the changeover from those date back to value back printings. MAY 2023 U.S. Paper Money Price Guide Slim pickings this issue for Fractionals and Small notes, but a treasure trove of Large Size notes from the March Stacks Bowers auctions in California. A most amazing Fr 2, a $5 Demand note in a 65 grade sold for $408,000. The first 65 we have recorded for the almost 20 years that Bank Note Reporter has seen since we started the price guide. The next highest grade for this note in our records is an Extra Fine note which weighs in at $18,500. You could say that the 65 graded note is a condition rarity in a really big way. Four rare U.S. bank notes recently sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Stack’s Bowers’ Spring 2023 Auction - Session 7 - U.S. Currency sale, which was held on March 23, 2023. Over 400 PMG-certified U.S. notes were included in the auction. The top note in the auction was an 1861 $5 Demand Note (Philadelphia) graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20091) that realized $408,000. For a short time during the Civil War, Demand Notes were the lone federal currency. Since almost every Demand Note was redeemed, very few remain available to collectors these days. This note from Walker, Minn., charter 8476. represents a high priority report for me because it is from one of Van Belkum’s “not marked as to type” entries in his national bank note serial number issuance data set that is used throughout our hobby. The problem was that the clerks failed to write the years for many entries in the National Currency and Bond Ledgers during the date back to post-date back transition period. In this case, the entire date is missing. Consequently, Van Belkum was unable to assign those printings to a type when they straddled the changeover. This example involved sheets 1501 through 1650. Has cold cash gone the way of Rodney Dangerfield? Don’t coins and bank notes get respect? Apparently not, according to Bank of Namibia Director of Currency Management and Banking Operations Sencia Kaizemi-Rukata. There is a chronic shortage of coins circulating in the African nation. Kaizemi-Rukata is asking Namibians to stop hoarding them, either using them at retail stores or bringing them to banks. Kaizemi-Rukata said, “Please circulate the coins. If you have some, please take them to the bank. The shops are asking for them as well.” Namibians apparently enjoy their cash to an extent the government doesn’t appreciate. According to the Currency Management and Banking Operations director, “There is a trend that is now emerging of people splashing cash at weddings or taking pictures of themselves with cash. It…

Rare Confederate bank notes are among the many notes that are being offered in a Heritage Auctions sale. Bidding is already underway for the CSNS Currency Signature Auction, being held May 3-5, 2023. Among the Confederate note highlights is an 1861 T-3 $100 graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 21006) with an estimate of at least $35,000. Bearing serial number 813, this note was included in a second batch of 1,000 sheets of $50 and $100 notes that were taken out of New York City by sea, only shortly before federal forces attempted to intercept them, according to the auction house. This is a proof of the highest denomination in the Series of 1878 silver certificates. No issued Series of 1878 $1,000s are known to have survived. There are two interesting features on these notes that are readily observed on this proof. The notes were issued against silver dollars deposited in Treasury offices in New York, Washington, and San Francisco. Those locations had to be overprinted on the notes and the overprint was placed over the lower part of the Treasury seal in the space below the words “The Assistant Treasurer of the U.S.” Furthermore, there was a large space for a signature labeled: “For, Assistant Treasurer U.S.” to the left of the engraved signatures of Schofield and Gilfillan. The Higgins Museum of National Bank Notes has hired George Cuhaj as curator for the 2023 summer season. Located in Okoboji, Iowa since 1978, the museum has the largest collection of National Bank Notes on permanent exhibition in the nation. The exhibition includes examples of large and small size bank notes of all series and denominations with primary emphasis on Iowa and surrounding states. Additional items include bank postcards, a bank teller’s cage, intaglio “spider” press, a four note sheet signature imprint machine and cutter in addition to an extensive research library with a banking emphasis.
