BAGGERS, I have subscribed for several years, and it seems the tech articles are getting less tech. For example, in June’s “Speaker Upgrade” article, no mention is made of unplugging and plugging back in the wiring. Also in June, the article on installing the 120 engine wasn’t much detail on installing the rotor and primary cover. The pictures show them already installed. July’s article on installing shocks states that after removing the factory shocks, the new ones were put on. No step-by-step instructions or pictures. The tech articles now are basically take the old part off and put the new one on. It would be nice to mention the tools needed—what size and if they’re SAE, Torx, or Allen. Thanks, DAVE S. It’s 5 a.m. and I’m backing down my dark, damp driveway to beat the Southern California traffic and take an early-morning ride. There’s still a chance of showers, but I’ll be damned if I don’t ride the new 2016 Indian Chieftain Dark Horse on the first day I’ve got it. I truly enjoy new businesses or projects. I’ve always been one of those people whose mind spins in circles thinking about making things more efficient or just better. I like to experience things and think of how I can improve them. I’ve been to my fair share of motorcycle rides in my time, and I really enjoy riding with a big pack of riders. It’s official. The age of the big wheel is in a state of decline. Yes, the mega-hoop baggers were very different. For a little while. They took style to its sensible limits and far beyond. I wrote many of them up for this very magazine, and while that was fun, you get tired of the same flavor. We have been working on this Road King build for almost a year now here at Baggers. The bike build goes back even farther than that though. I started the initial build of this bike back in 2011 when I worked at Harley. I had actually finished the build in 2013 but sadly wrecked soon after. After it was totaled it sat in pieces in a garage until we decided to resurrect it again through Baggers. We had the frame customized by Chassis Design, which came out great. We’ve long been fans of Öhlins Suspension. Probably growing up on dirt bikes and sportbikes, the iconic gold fork tubes or gold piggyback shocks always resonated with us. The crew did their homework with branding and marketing because we easily conjure up images from yesteryear when we see Öhlins shocks on motorcycles. Well, Harley guys seem to like the color black better. We get it. We like black too. Hence the decision for Öhlins to produce a quality performance shock for the Harley-Davidson market, especially the bagger market and, of course, in black. Mark Atkins has a way of making a 500-pound Harley look like a lightweight, two-stroke dirt bike. The first time I saw him ride, he was clearing 50-foot jumps and spraying dirt like he was on a bike that was actually built for it. The two-wheeled world now knows him well for his stunts, flat-track racing, as well as his T-shirt and leather goods company, Rusty Butcher.
