My old man, brother and I have caught a wide range of trophy boars from all ranges of country in QLD and NSW. From unforgiving mountains to thick corn and sorghum, to scrub, open cattle country and swamplands. Every boar is different and every boar tells a different story. Hunting such a vast range of terrains requires a few dogs in our hunting pack. We run two Brian Neal/Warrego Arabs (Bunji and Bella) that are used as Ute and ground finders/luggers. Always when out hunting, I ignore my aches and pains, I eat the same food every day and always make good gains, Resist any complaining, and boring people with my hurts. My mate Matty Willis and I decided to go out for a look on the quads one morning at a nearby station. We covered a few kilometres along the river with plenty of sign around, but no jumps from the dogs. We pushed on to check a couple of swamps and finally, the dogs all jumped and pulled up a good sow weighing 104kg. We decided to head back because it was starting to heat up a bit too much to keep running the dogs. After heaps of sign of pigs, my brother, mate and I from Wagga Wagga decided we would go looking for them. After an early morning start, we stumbled across a mob of pigs lying around the dam. We rushed up into them and dropped eighteen with the shotgun and not many got away. All pigs weren't overly big, but it was still a good find. Hunting under the dark of night has got to be one of my most favourite methods of shooting. Some of the things you get to see and watch are just unreal! I've set myself up with a thermal scope sitting on a 30-06. I find it best used sitting on carcasses. Living and working on a remote cattle station in some of Australia's thickest mulga, the pigs are hard to get at. My way of hunting the big boars out here is when the opportunity arises, set up a good bait-station and come in late at night with the thermal and check the carcasses. We rushed the dogs into gearing up and headed off for a morning hunt in the mountains one morning. Only running our main dogs off the Ute, the backups were confined to the cage for now. We had a few good finds and a some nice boars along with a heap of mob pigs, so we kept on poking on until we flushed out a nice mob. The dogs split up, so we ran to our smallest bitch that had a pig bailed in a bush with no lugger. Warthogs are found on the plains and savannas of Africa where they spend the day munching grass. Nights, they spend underground in their dens. Although the hogs have a good sense of smell, their weak eyesight allows a stalker, with a low sun behind him and the wind in his face, to get up pretty close; so close that I have shot quite a few with my muzzle loader. At the fit young age of 40, young Michael Saunders is still getting about busting boars when he can. LOL! Michael spent a day of late cruising around the scrubby paddocks amongst the fallen timber and Wilga terrain. Leaving the dog at home on this day, he’s thanking himself he did, as these three brutes would have caused a ruckus to say the least. There is always a good population of pigs roaming the hillsides around home in the Central West. One warm December night in the Crookwell area, I went out hunting with my mate Gareth and his three dogs (Bear, Ted and Sooty). We walked about 15km that night and caught a big bugger about halfway in. After the chase and hold, we dispatched the mountain marauder and then caped him out for the carry about 7km back to the Ute. He was the third good pig for the night and the biggest in both tusk and body that I have ever seen. He put up a good fight for the dogs and luckily never connected with a hook.
