Despite appearances, this isn’t an all-new Renault Clio. No, this is a more visually aggressive take on the fifth-generation supermini, which adopts a “more fun, less fuel” approach.
The facelifted car was meant to be sold here only with the E-Tech Full Hybrid powertrain, but Renault recently announced it would also keep the 1.0 TCe engine (an 89bhp turbo three-pot) “in order to meet the needs of some customers in a difficult economic climate”. Kudos.
Here, though, we’re driving the E-Tech, which features a 1.6-litre petrol engine, a 48bhp electric motor, a 24bhp starter-generator and a small (1.2kWh) drive battery.
Priced from £21,295, it’s the cheapest hybrid on sale in the UK today, below the rival Toyota Yaris (£22,125) and Honda Jazz (£26,395).
