Well, as he’s rural and sometimes he strays into the mud, four-wheel drive certainly helps. Also, during trips into town, the stubbiness of the Freelander was a positive. So an SUV-lite or similar will do.
What better than a Suzuki SX4? The original 2006-2015 model is within budget, and I came across a 2011 1.6 4Grip SZ5. It had just under 80,000 miles with a recent clutch and service. The asking price was a reasonable £4000. Five previous owners seemed a bit much, but the condition was tidy enough.
