You published two lovely and interesting letters about the Triumph 2.5 PI of 1969 in your 1 February issue.
When I was in my early teens, this was a desirable car. I don’t think, though, that you can compare its inflated price of £23,895 to a modern car. This is only looking at the actual cost, but over the past 45 years there have been massive qualitative improvements in the cars we buy: equipment, tyres, suspension, fuel efficiency, crash protection and so on.
Of further interest is the comment that you would now only get a Volkswagen Golf for the same inflated cost of the 2.5 PI, a large saloon. Well, the Golf covers 98% of the footprint of the 2.5 PI, and a 1.5 TSI model easily has 20%…
