KIA’S ROLL-OUT OF electric cars has shifted up a gear with the confirmation of seven dedicated electric models due to be launched by 2027. The “diverse” line-up of EVs will span several vehicle segments, with the first – internally dubbed CV – being a mid-sized crossover hatch spotted earlier this year. Kia says the range will include models “suitable for urban centres, long-range journeys and performance driving”. The seven dedicated EVs will join four other EVs based on combustion-engined models due by 2025. They will draw on the Hyundai group’s E-GMP electric platform. Maserati has vowed that the forthcoming electric version of its new MC20 supercar will offer class-leading performance when it arrives in 2022 – and it will showcase technology that will eventually be adopted by other brands in the merged Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group. The zero-emissions MC20 is one of four fully electric cars that Maserati will launch by the end of 2022 as part of its new Folgore EV sub-brand, alongside the new Grecale SUV and next-generation Granturismo and Grancabrio. Following in 2023/2024 will be new versions of the Quattroporte and Levante, again with electric variants. SUZUKI’S STRATEGIC alliance with Toyota has produced a hybrid estate based on the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports. Called the Swace, it joins the Toyota RAV4-based Across and will go on sale in Europe in the coming months. Bearing a strong resemblance to the model on which it is based, the Swace features a redesigned front end with Suzuki-specific grille and bumper. Only badging and minor details are changed elsewhere. The differences are even less obvious inside. Bar a new steering wheel, it’s Toyota fare. The Swace will be available from launch as a 120bhp 1.8-litre version only, unlike the Corolla, which is also offered with a 181bhp 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain. HYUNDAI’S i30 N hot hatch has been updated for 2020, with many changes mirroring those of the facelifted regular i30 launched earlier this year. External tweaks include new front and rear bumpers, a revised grille, new LED headlights and tail-lights and 19in forged alloy wheels that reduce unsprung mass by 14kg. Tested by Autocar in prototype form (First drives, 16 September), the new i30 N benefits from chassis revisions to boost ride quality, 15mm-bigger brake discs at the front and an extra 5bhp from the 2.0-litre turbo engine, up to 276bhp. A new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox is offered as an option for the first time. Post-opulent. That’s an unusual way to describe a car that costs £208,000 and on top of which you have to pay extra for lambswool floor mats, you might think. But here we are, with the all-new Rolls-Royce Ghost, the second generation of a car that made its debut in 2009 and went on to become the most successful Rolls of all time. A record I suspect it will lose to the Cullinan SUV before long. The first time around, there were large elements of large BMW beneath the Ghost. You know the drill for limited-edition MX-5s. Mazda’s iconic two-seater has received so many over the years that we’ve lost count, but that hasn’t stopped them from selling. Only so many of each will be made, after all, and their bespoke colour schemes usually help them stand out from regular models. That’s not entirely the case for the new R-Sport. Its polymetal grey paint and matching fabric roof don’t exactly scream ‘look at me’ and even its Rays 16in forged alloy wheels are on the subtle side. EDGE DEVIL If you want a no-holds-barred track toy with open wheels and an uprated Audi engine, you could go for a new KTM X-Bow – or you could save around £50,000 by tracking down an Edge Devil. Ferrari’s entry-level model, the Portofino, has been upgraded with the introduction of a more powerful, re-engineered M variant. The Portofino M (standing for Modificata, used historically to designate an evolution in performance) includes a host of technical enhancements over the standard model. It’s the first Ferrari to be unveiled purely online and the first to be launched since Maranello closed during Italy’s pandemic lockdown. Priced from €206,000 (£188,000), the Portofino M is just under £24,000 more expensive than the standard Portofino it will replace. Deliveries are due to start in mid-2021. LAND ROVER HAS boosted the appeal of the three-year-old Range Rover Velar with an overhaul of its technology, a renewed engine range and its first plug-in hybrid powertrain. The popular SUV hasn’t been changed externally, bar the addition of three new paint colours and wheel designs. Instead, the focus has been on the cabin, with Land Rover’s new Pivi and Pivi Pro infotainment systems added. The dual-screen layout is unchanged, but the graphics are better, while the software is completely overhauled to be quicker and easier to use. THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT a straight-six engine, with that intoxicating soundtrack and silky smooth power delivery. Yet for a time, it looked as though they would disappear from the radar to be replaced by vee engines. BMW even substituted a V8 for the M3’s sublime 3.2-litre six for a time. Now manufacturers are embracing the inline six once again and, ironically, one of the reasons for that is why they gave way to V6s in the first place: packaging. It was always the plan that this Vantage Roadster, a drop-roof version of Aston Martin’s most sporting car, would turn up at the same time as the DBX, its least sporting car. The Yaris proved reasonably composed and precise on the Millbrook Hill Route, although a version on 17in wheels and with the sharper suspension set-up would no doubt have proved more adept. There is also no doubt that numerous rivals offer more in the way of entertainment – not only the Ford Fiesta but also any Peugeot 208, Seat Ibiza or Mazda 2 equipped with three pedals and a conventional engine. The Yaris’s electronics nevertheless helped to prevent power-on understeer well enough and the inherently neutral handling balance meant decent speed could be carried throughout the lap. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are electric vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell system instead of a large battery pack. Hydrogen is stored in a tank at 700bar, a stack generates high-voltage electricity and a small buffer battery provides transient power for acceleration and storing energy from regenerative braking. Stacks are made up of smaller fuel cells (there are 370 in Toyota’s system), each containing a polymer membrane sandwiched between a catalyst-coated anode and cathode. Hydrogen flows through the cathode side and air through the anode side. Protons in the hydrogen atoms are attracted through the membrane to combine with oxygen in the air to make water, giving this type of fuel cell the name proton exchange membrane (PEM). Lewis Hamilton continued to add to his list of F1 records by winning the Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello two weekends ago. His 90th win came at a record-extending 27th different track and was his record-breaking 222nd points finish. He also extended his record points-scoring streak to 42 races. The Volkswagen Group is refusing to confirm reports from Germany that Bugatti will be sold to EV specialist Rimac. VW executives are rumoured to have approved the sale, but supervisory board approval is required. Porsche owns a 15.5% stake in Rimac, and it’s suggested that it would raise its stake to 49% in return for the sale to ensure VW still has a major say in Bugatti operations. Autocar understands the intention is to combine Rimac’s expertise with Porsche’s economies of scale to fast-track electric Bugattis to market.…

MERCEDES IS FULLY committed to expanding its Maybach sub-brand, CEO Ola Källenius has confirmed, despite the broader pressures of streamlining its wider lineup and ensuring profitability in a difficult marketplace. Maybach launched an SUV, the GLS Maybach, late last year and already offers a version of the S-Class. The new S-Class, revealed at the start of this month, will also get a Maybach version in future, which Källenius described as taking the subbrand to “the next level”. When asked if he plans to leverage Maybach as a separate brand, Källenius said: “The short answer is yes. Maybach has potential and we’re intending to exploit that potential. A productive future for Saab’s storied factory in Trollhättan, Sweden, will hinge on the success of a six-seat autonomous shuttle. The Sango has been designed and engineered in Trollhättan by Chinese-owned NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden), which acquired Saab’s main assets when it went out of business in 2012. The shuttle is scheduled to start trials in Stockholm in late 2021, operating under the SAE level-four classification for self-driving vehicles. “Sango is designed to compete with private cars, not public transport, and will be a vehicle that people use, rather than own, and has been designed with flexible shared use in mind,” said project chief engineer Anna Haupt. Although the Sango must undergo several years of trials before it can be fully operational, Haupt is bullish about its production future.…

Mainstream EV adoption will occur when a typical electric car costs £27,000, can achieve a real-world range of around 290 miles and can be fully recharged in just half an hour, according to a new global survey by Castrol and parent company BP. It has long been believed that the tipping point for the mass adoption of electric cars globally will arrive only when there are significant improvements to charging times and range, as well as reductions to the showroom cost of long-range EVs. Castrol says it commissioned a market research company to interview 10,000 consumers and fleet managers in eight countries (China, India, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Norway and Japan). The competition that has materialised at the expensive end of the market for fast four-door GT cars has evidently come as something of a surprise to Porsche. When the company introduced the second-generation Panamera in 2016, 542bhp was considered to be plenty for the Turbo version. Then along came the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S, Audi RS7 Sportback and BMW M8 Competition four-doors, all offering enough grunt to put the ‘big’ Porsche well and truly in the shade – which, needless to say, is not somewhere Porsche is used to being put. Hydrogen has been touted as the ideal zero-carbon fuel for a couple of decades now, yet it has so far failed to catch on. However, in January of this year, the Hydrogen Council, an organisation comprising 92 major companies, claimed that the 2020s will be “the decade of hydrogen”. Chris King became so stressed about thieves targeting his Toyota Auris for a second time that he sold it and now travels by bus. “The first time they stole my car’s catalytic converter was in April at quarter to one in the morning,” he says. “I was woken by a loud crash, followed by a car screeching away.
