Car manufacturers used to shy away from talking about platforms, but there are no such dramas when it comes to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi CMF ‘common module family’. Although, they collectively say, it’s not a platform: it’s several platforms, a ‘cross-sector concept’, if you will. No, I don’t know, either.
Anyway, the short of it is that there are five modular ‘bits’ to the CMF concept: an engine, front subframe/suspension, rear subframe/suspension, dashboard/front seats, and an electrical architecture. The group can pick and choose to mate various parts together, so it can be different sizes, it can have different powertrains, including electrified variants, and it saves money.
