BEFORE THE NEXT i8 arrives on the scene, BMW will launch the iNext, an electric SUV with advanced autonomous technology. Imagined by Autocar (left), the new model has already begun winter testing in Sweden in prototype form ahead of its 2021 launch. The iNext was first revealed in concept form at last year’s Los Angeles motor show. It sits on a radical new platform that’s different from those used by other planned i models, including the iX3 SUV and i4 saloon. THE HYUNDAI IONIQ has been updated across the range with a number of performance, technology and styling updates. The electric version now gets a new 38.3kWh battery pack offering 182 miles of WLTP-certified range – a 36% improvement over the outgoing car. It also receives a new 7.2kW on-board charger, allowing an 80% charge in as little as 54min. The powertrains of the straight hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants remain unchanged. Visual changes include a redesigned front fascia, revised front bumpers and reshaped lights. A BY-PRODUCT OF the technological cascade towards electrification is that terminology sometimes gets as confusing as a classic car’s wiring harness. Terms such as HEV (hybrid electric vehicle), PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), BEV (battery-electric vehicle) and EREV (extended-range electric vehicle) get scattered around copy like confetti. Question is, where do you draw the line drawn between one and another? What’s the difference between a PHEV and an EREV, for instance? Or an EV and a BEV? There can’t be many people this side of the moon who would still wonder about the identity of the Tesla Model 3 if they saw one parked in the street. You’d think that 100 racing cars – one for every 60 metres of track – would just make for one enormous traffic jam. But if those cars are all slow, and the circuit and race are long – like, say, Citroën C1s at Silverstone for 24 hours – it turns out it’s the most fantastic thing in the world. This should be no surprise, because the C1 Racing Club has really hit on something. It first raced only two years ago yet easily got 99 cars to the Silverstone grid (one of the 100 entries not making it on the day) and its other endurance races are routinely oversubscribed. AUDI HAS REVEALED a new S4 saloon and Avant estate fitted with a 342bhp mild-hybrid turbocharged diesel V6 engine. The new unit replaces the outgoing petrol V6, which is believed to have fallen foul of the new WLTP emissions regulations. The new powertrain, in a slightly different state of tune, is already offered in the S5, S6 and S7 Sportback. In the S4, it produces 516lb ft of torque, allowing the saloon to dispatch 0-62mph in 4.8sec, with the Avant 0.1sec slower. Both models have a governed top speed of 155mph. The two versions of the Mercedes-AMG C43 rival will retain Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system and use an eight-speed automatic gearbox. “Hyundai’s design chiefs determined the Sonata would be the range’s design flag-bearer” Future Hyundai, Kia and Genesis designs will become more differentiated from one another, and their models within each segment will become more individual. That’s the strategy being pushed by the design chief of all three brands, Luc Donckerwolke, who said that “our core task is to differentiate the design philosophy of the three brands, not least because we have a big [around 70%] share in Korea. We need to differentiate each model, otherwise the landscape is too homogeneous”. The fractious nature of the alliance between Renault and Nissan was exposed in dramatic style when then chairman Carlos Ghosn was arrested in Japan last year, and five months later the sticking plasters applied in the interim are coming loose. Well, this wasn’t good. It happened rather suddenly one Friday when the Lorry sprang a leak. First thoughts were oil, because it looked very oily. I assumed a seal had gone on the transfer box or something, looking at the location. Oddly enough, I’d been pre-booked to pick up a massively heavy old sofa to add to the old sofas we already have. Someone knew their motors when they snapped up this rare XJC for £16,417. It’s a 1977 car in three-star condition so not mint but in good, everyday-usable nick, so they won’t be frightened of running it. True, the V12 or its Daimler Double-Six equivalent are where the action is but a good 4.2 is not to be sniffed at. Ford is poised to reveal what could be its most crucial (and controversial) model yet: an all-electric, Mustang-inspired crossover. Avast lithium ion battery plant to supply a new generation of electric cars is on course to open in the UK “in the early 2020s”, with a decision due in the next 12 to 18 months. A gigafactory – as they are known, thanks to Tesla – is essential to the future of UK car production as output pivots from combustion-engined cars to hybrids and battery-electric vehicles. The government wants 50% of new car sales to be electrified by 2030. Demand for cells and battery packs is forecast to grow by such an extent that the UK’s assembly plants will need 70 gigawatts of battery capacity by 2030, enough for up to eight gigafactories, according to a new report from the government’s Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC). “We are working with…

Mitsubishi will reorganise its SUV line-up to create clearer space between the Outlander, Eclipse Cross and ASX, a senior source has revealed. The strategy, set to roll out from 2020, will be made possible by the firm’s position within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which it joined in 2016 and which gives it access to shared platforms between the brands. Although the source was not specific on car sizes, they said that there would be roughly a 200mm gap in length between each car, giving Mitsubishi a line-up similar to Nissan’s respective X-Trail, Qashqai and Juke triumvirate. Hyundai expects fuel cell sales to grow much faster than anticipated, according to one of its hydrogen specialists. Sae Hoon Kim said the group will sell 6000 Nexos in 2019, 11,000 in 2020 and 500,000 fuel cell vehicles by 2030, along with 200,000 fuel cell systems. Hoon Kim’s confidence stems in part from the difficulty of achieving CO2 emission compliance over the next decade, and the fact that fuel cell technology is a very attractive solution for low-emission trucks, trains and ships. For the European Union, the regulations require a 37.5% CO2 drop from 2021 limits by 2030. With CO2 reductions planned on this scale, “for Europe the only option is battery-electric vehicles” (BEV), said Hoon Kim. He added that “the technical barrier is not that high [for BEVs], which…

LAWS REQUIRING ALL new vehicles sold in the UK to have zero local emissions should be brought forward to as early as 2030, according to a report from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC). The move would help the UK reduce carbon emissions to nearly zero by 2050, according to the report, which also called for substantial investment to improve the electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The CCC says current government plans to require all new cars sold from 2040 to have zero emissions – banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars – are too soft. It also estimates battery-electric vehicles should be cheaper to purchase than petrol and diesel cars by 2030, and offer substantial reductions in running costs. This is the 2019 version of Audi’s R8 Spyder. It’s got two seats, a convertible roof and a really rather large naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine positioned just aft of the cockpit. And because this particular car is the go-faster Performance version, that V10 produces 612bhp and a peak torque figure of 428lb ft, which isn’t delivered until 6600rpm. How are your knees feeling? A bit weak? Thought they might be. Deploy all of that on a straight road and the result is every bit as dramatic as you’d expect and hope it to be. Acceleration is delightfully linear and impressively rapid up until 6000rpm, at which point it all becomes really rather absurd. A good-sized bump or ridge hitting the loaded side of the Levante S’s axles midway through a hard-charged corner is all it takes to demonstrate that the car isn’t the most dynamically sophisticated luxury SUV of its kind. The car’s ride becomes a bit wooden and brittle when thus interrogated, lacking the ability to keep its body upright while retaining much dexterity in reserve. The car’s medium-paced steering means it takes more physical input to get it turned into tighter bends than you might expect to put in. Psychologists Robert Yerkes and John Dodson developed what’s not so commonly referred to as the ‘Yerkes-Dodson law’ in 1908. It describes the empirical relationship between arousal and human performance and states that performance increases with physiological or mental arousal, but only up to a point. Here it is, a small quality hatch that you’d be proud to own. There is a great range of engines. Some argue that the petrol 1.6s are not that sporty, but they are more than adequate for most buyers who just want a posh hatch.
